No. 2 NC State to Face UNC Tuesday in ‘Duel at the DBAP’

RALEIGH, N.C. – Following its ninth consecutive ACC series win, the second-ranked NC State baseball team will take on No. 15 UNC-Chapel Hill in the ‘Duel at the DBAP’ Tuesday evening. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the midweek tilt will be a non-conference matchup.

The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU with Dari Nowkah handling play-by-play and Javier Lopez serving as the analyst. Radio coverage will also be available on WKNC 88.1 FM and on GoPack.com for premium subscribers.

NC State heads into the midweek battle with a 28-7 overall record, while UNC-Chapel Hill is 24-12.

Tickets for the game are still available and can be purchased HERE. The Wolfpack will be the visiting team and occupy the first base dugout.

Last Time Out
In its most recent outing, NC State swept a doubleheader against Notre Dame to clinch the series. The Wolfpack dropped the series opener but rallied to win games two and three for the fourth consecutive weekend to earn the series win.

NCSU scored 25 runs in the twin bill on Saturday, pushing across 12 runs in the first game and 13 in the nightcap.

The Series
Tuesday’s game will be the 298th all-time meeting between the programs, as UNC-Chapel Hill leads the series 164-132-1.

Last Time Versus UNC-Chapel Hill
NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill last met during the 2017 ACC Championship, when the Tar Heels earned a 12-4 win to advance to the semifinals.

Last Time Versus UNC-Chapel Hill at the DBAP
The two teams last met at the DBAP during the 2013 ACC Championship when the Tar Heels edged the Wolfpack in an 18-inning thriller, 2-1. The contest lasted six hours and three minutes and still stands as the longest game in ACC Tournament history.

Wilson Garners Second ACC Player of the Week
Will Wilson was the named the ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, April 16. He helped lead NC State to a 3-1 record last week, compiling a .316 batting average with eight RBI, six runs and three home runs.

The sophomore shortstop recorded his second career multi-homer game in the series finale against Notre Dame to clinch the series, as the Wolfpack extended its ACC series-win streak to nine dating back to 2017.

NC State has scored four of more runs in an inning 21 times this season with the most recent occurrence in game two of the doubleheader against Notre Dame. The Wolfpack scored six runs in the third inning and added four runs in the seventh en route to the victory.

The Pack’s season high for runs in an inning is eight, accomplished in the fourth inning of the Campbell game on March 3 and the seventh inning of the Air Force game on Feb. 26.

Nine in a Row
The Wolfpack owns the ACC’s longest active series-win streak, as NC State has won nine consecutive conference series. NC State has won each of its weekend matchups dating back to the Virginia Tech series from last season.

NC State Outfielder Josh Hogue Out for Remainder of the Season

NC State will be without Sophomore Right Fielder Josh Hogue for the remainder of the season. Hogue unfortunately suffered a fractured leg due to a collision with Center Fielder Eli Serrano III on Saturday, with both players diving for a ball in the outfield.

Hogue will have to undergo surgery, and he is expected to be out 4 months.

This is a huge loss for the Wolfpack. Hogue has been batting 3rd in NC State’s lineup, with the 3rd best batting average on the squad (.314) and 4th best OPS (.848).

On Sunday, Freshman 2nd Baseman Luke Nixon moved out to Right Field to fill the void, and his brother Chase Nixon was in Right. Starter Senior Noah Soles has been out since the Notre Dame Series at the end of March, but he has been taking batting practice and should be returning soon.

#21 NC State Defeats Ball St. 11-3 in Finale, Completing Sweep of Cardinals

#21 NC State defeated Ball St. 11-3 this afternoon, completing the sweep of the Cardinals.

Freshman Cooper Consiglio got the start, and pitched a career high 85 pitches, giving up 2 earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched. He struck out 3, and walked 3.

Junior Carson Kelly came in for an inning of relief after Consiglio’s exodus, and even though he gave up a run, he was credited with the win.

Junior’s Jacob Cozart (C) and Brandon Butterworth (SS) each hit Home Runs, and each had 3 RBI’s. Cozart was a double shy of hitting for the Cycle. He is on a torrid streak, hitting Home Runs in 6 of the last 7 games.

Sophomore Center Fielder Eli Serrano III had a multi-hit game, going 2 for 5 with 2 Runs, and Senior 3rd Baseman Alec Makerewicz had a 2 RBI Double.

The Wolfpack will host UNCW this Tuesday at 5pm.

NC State Defeats Ball St. 9-3, Securing the Series Victory

Sophomore Dom Fritton was solid this afternoon in NC State’s 9-3 win over Ball State, securing the series victory. He gave up 1 earned run in 5.2 innings, striking out 4 (3 walks). The bullpen was solid, with Freshman Jaxon Lucas pitching 1 inning with no earned runs (1 unearned run), while Sophomore Shane Van Dam gave up 1 run in 2.1 innings, striking out 3. Fritton is now 3-3 on the year with a 6.89 ERA.

Sophomore Center Fielder Eli Serrano III had a 2 RBI Single in the Bottom of the 2nd, which gave the Wolfpack their 3rd run of the inning after Senior 3rd Baseman Alec Makarewicz scored off a wild pitch.

In the Bottom of the 3rd, Junior Catcher Jacob Cozart hit a solo shot, his 11th Home Run of the year, which is a new career high.

In the Bottom of the 5th, the Wolfpack would tack on 3 more runs. A-Mak had an RBI groundout, Junior Left Fielder Chase Nixon had an RBI Single, and then he scored when his brother Luke was caught stealing.

In the Bottom of the 7th, Chase Nixon knocked in 2 more with an RBI Double. He also had this web gem in the Top of the 8th, which would have surely scored 2 runs without his diving effort.

The Wolfpack and the Cardinals will close out the series tomorrow at 1pm at Doak Field.
