NC State’s Bracketology Report After UVA Series Victory

Published

on

#17 NC State just wrapped up an incredible week, shutting out Norfolk St. 18-0 in a midweek game, and defeating UVA in 2 out of 3 on the road. When the Wolfpack headed to Charlottesville, the Cavaliers were ranked 10th (now 18th).

According to D1Baseball’s most recent Bracketology report after this weekend’s games, NC State is projected to be a #2 seed in the Starkville Regional. Mississippi St. is the projected #16 seed.

D1Baseball listed NC State, Oklahoma St., Dallas Baptist and Duke as being on the Regional Host Bubble.

I agree with Alex Gee’s assessment here.

NC State has 3 Series Victories over Top-10 teams and 4 Series against Top-15 teams. Personally, I think a strong argument could be made for NC State hosting a Regional as things currently stand. With that being said, if they find a way to win the series against #8 Wake Forest at home later this week, the debate will be over.

NC State 1B Garrett Pennington Named Week 13 ACC Player of the Week

Published

on

NC State Senior 1st Baseman Garrett Pennington has been named the Week 13 ACC Player of the Week for his work against Norfolk St. in a midweek game, and his dominant performance up in Charlottesville this past weekend.

Pennington set the tone as NC State secured its third series win over a top-10 opponent this season, taking two of three games at No. 10 Virginia over the weekend. Pennington went 11-for-17 (.647) with 11 runs scored, 10 RBI, three homers and four multi-hit games as the Wolfpack recorded a 3-1 week. Pennington posted a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored, three RBI and a double against Norfolk State, before delivering three straight three-hit outings against the Cavaliers, opening the series with a 3-for-5 showing with a double and a home run. Pennington’s two-run homer in the top of the eighth proved to be the game-winning runs for the Pack in the 7-5 win. The Lenexa, Kansas native then homered for the second straight game in Saturday’s contest, going 3-for-4 with four runs scored, three RBI and a home run in the series-clinching win on Sunday. Pennington’s towering two-run shot marked his third homer in three days. He now leads the Wolfpack with 55 runs scored and sits second with54 RBI following his standout week. (TheACC)

#23 NC State Crushes #10 Cavaliers 13-5 to Win 1st Series at UVA Since 2016

Published

on

#23 NC State crushed the #10 Cavaliers yesterday 13-5 in a rubber match, giving the Wolfpack their first series victory at UVA since 2016. It was their first series victory over the Cavaliers since 2019.

Senior Logan Whitaker got the start, but it was Freshman Cooper Consiglio who earned MVP honors from the mound. After Whitaker gave up 5 earned runs in 4.2 innings (5 K’s/0 BB’s), Consiglio came in and pitched 4.1 innings of 1-hit baseball, giving up 0 earned runs, while striking out 3.

Consiglio has done his best work against the best competition this season.

In the Top of the 1st, Junior Shortstop Brandon Butterworth gave the Wolfpack a 3-0 lead with a Home Run, which was his 6th of the year. Prior to this year, the most Home Runs Butterworth ever hit in in a single season was 5 last year at Western Carolina.

Virginia would respond in the Bottom of the 2nd with 4 runs to take the lead, but it wouldn’t last too long. The Wolfpack scored four of their own in the Top of the 4th. Senior 1st Baseman Garrett Pennington got things started with an RBI Single, and Senior 3rd Baseman Alec Makarewicz followed that up with an RBI Double.

The Wolfpack were fortunate to score the next two runs, scoring one on a wild pitch, and another when the Cavaliers lost a fly ball in the sunlight that was easily catchable.

With a 2-run lead in the Top of the 6th, Pennington hit his 3rd Home Run of the series, with this one knocking in 2 Runs.

Pennington has now hit 14 Home Runs this season.

In the Top of the 7th, Sophomore Matt Heavner hit a Sac Fly, and in the Top of the 8th, Freshman Left Fielder Luke Nixon put an exclamation point on the game, hitting a 3-Run Home Run.

Pennington was on fire this weekend. Yesterday afternoon, he was 3 for 4 with 4 Runs and 3 RBI’s.

Nixon was 2 for 4 with a Home Run and a Triple.

NC State has Top-10 series wins against Clemson (#2), UVA (#10), and Duke (#9), with another Top-15 series win over UNC (#11). The Wolfpack also split a 2-game series against FSU (#7).

NC State (29-19/15-11) will close out the regular season later this week with a 3-game series against #12 Wake Forest at home.
