on

This is a breakdown of NC State’s best football recruiting commits over the past 14 years according to ESPN (ESPN’s recruiting rankings date back to 2006). I will be doing the exact same thing for Rivals and 247Sports over the next couple of days.

1) DE Savion Jackson – 86 – 31st overall – 2019
2) DT Kentavius Street – 84 – 64th Overall – 2014

4) LB Payton Wilson – 84 – 105th Overall – 2018
5) QB Mike Glennon – 83 – 32nd Overall – 2008
6) ATH Brandon Barnes – 82 – 85th Overall – 2008

14) RB Ricky Person – 80 – 299th Overall – 2018

12 Players Tied with a Grade of 80

(All 4-Star Recruits)

CB De’Von Graves – 80 – 2018
QB Devin Leary – 80 – 2018
QB Matt McKay – 80 – 2017 (247Sports and Rivals Ranked as 3-Star)
TE Thaddeus Moss – 80 – 2016
OT Emanuel McGirt – 80 – 2015
ATH Troy Vincent Jr. – 80 – 2014 (247Sports and Rivals Ranked as 3-Star)
QB Jalan McClendon – 80 – 2014
DT Justin Jones – 80 – 2014
CB Sean Paul – 80 – 2013 (247Sports and Rivals Ranked as 3-Star)
WR Hakeem Flowers – 80 – 2011 (247Sports and Rivals Ranked as 3-Star)
DE Fre’Shad Hunter – 80 – 2010 (Didn’t end up enrolling due to grades)
DE Mario Carter – 80 – 2008 (247Sports Ranked as 3-Star)

Quite a few of these recruits are so recent, it is unknown just how accurate their recruiting rankings were. With that being said, here are a few notes.

  • 2019 commit Savion Jackson is the highest Wolfpack commit of the past 14 seasons according to ESPN.
  • Kentavius Street, Mike Glennon, Nyheim Hines, Will Richardson, and Justin Jones lived up to the hype. All 5 of them had successful careers at NC State, and are currently playing in the NFL.
  • ESPN took a shot with Matt McKay, Troy Vincent Jr, Sean Paul, Hakeem Flowers, and Mario Carter, ranking them with one more star than Rivals and 247. Sometimes you take a shot, and you miss, and I would say for the most part they did with each of these players. Vincent Jr., Doeren’s most significant commitment in his second year, flipping from a Penn St. commitment, transferred to Towson. Paul saw action in only 5 games over three seasons in Raleigh, picking up 6 total tackles. Flowers transferred to Nicholls State University after not finding his niche in Raleigh.
  • All the recruiting databases overrated Brandon Barnes, Johnny Frasier and Robert Crisp. Barnes played in only 13 games over 3 seasons, accumulating only 214 yards in the ground, averaging 3.0 yards per carry. Crisp, the #2 Offensive Tackle in his class, couldn’t stay healthy, and find a consistent place in the starting plineup. Frasier, only played in 5 games, rushing for 64 yards, before deciding to leave the school to recover from an injury and focus on academics.
  • We will have to wait and see if Thaddeus Moss lives up to his hype. He had flashes of brilliance in his freshman season, but transferred to LSU and sat out last season.

It’s not shocking that Young included the Wolfpack, because back on April 15th he shared that he had locked in an Official Visit to NC State for June 19-21. He also has Official Visits scheduled to Clemson (May 31), FSU (June 14), and Tennessee (June 21).

All 4 recruiting databases rank Young as a Top-200 prospect nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, with ESPN, 247Sports and ON3 ranking him in the Top-35. 247Sports ranks him as the #29 overall player nationally, the #2 Safety and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

This past season, Young had 66 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries, 1 interception and 3 pass breakups for Monroe High School. On the offensive side of the ball, he had 34 receptions for 812 yards and 8 touchdowns.

4-Star Safety Jontae Gilbert Has Locked in an Official Visit to NC State

Published

on

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.

Published

on

According to a source, 2025 3-Star Edge Nik Alston (6’3″/260) has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for June 7-9.

Alston plays for Thompson High School in Birmingham, Alabama, and is ranked as the #40 overall player in the state in the 2025 class according to 247Sports.

Back on April 6th, Alston was in attendance for NC State’s 2024 Spring Game, and he walked away with an offer. He also holds offers from Minnesota, Washington, Liberty, Georgia Tech and Tulane.

He also has Official Visits scheduled for Washington, Minnesota, Liberty and Tulane. Honestly, some of the dates that I have found overlap at this point, but these were all reported at one time.

This past season, Alston had 37 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 2 fumble recoveries.

When I spoke with Alston in the past, he said NC State would be at the top of his list.
