Dave Doeren Talks After Day 4 of NC State’s 2018 Fall Camp: BULLETED

Published

on

Head Coach Dave Doeren spoke to the media after Day 4 of NC State’s 2018 Fall Camp. Here’s what he had to say in BULLETED form, with the video below.

  • Senior Running Back Reggie Gallaspy just had another great practice. Best place he’s been physically and mentally. Having a child a couple of years ago, and all that adds to a players life, and numerous injuries, I just think he’s in a good place. He’s in good shape and understands whats at stake. Only been 4 days, but he’s a Senior thats playing like a Senior. He’s definitely our starting running back. How much the other guys factor in will have to do with what they prove.
  • Gallaspy was huge for NC State last year on 3rd down. Incredible in pass protection. For quarterback Ryan Finley, it’s like having another starting offensive lineman back there. He trusts him so much.
  • Both Freshmen running back Ricky Person and Trent Pennix are great coming out of the backfield in the passing game. Great hands. That’s what they look for when they recruit running backs. Even being able to put them in the slot.
  • Experience in the running game isn’t where you would want it to be. Nyheim Hines leaving early, and Erin Collins transferring. Holes that weren’t there when you set up your recruiting board. Every year there are freshman and redshirt freshman that make a name for themselves in college football.
  • Doesn’t look a the new 4-game redshirt rule as experimental time with these kids. If they’re ready, we will play them, and that’s based on the news of that position. Having guys available in the middle of the season and the end of the season is valuable too. You don’t want to play them all early. As you know there are injuries in college football. Then you have guys available on the developmental team you can bring up.
  • Likes the way Junior Cornerback Nick McCloud processes the game. His preparation. Way he goes about the game. Work-ethic. He’s getting to go against great wide receivers every day. You can’t replace experience.
  • Redshirt Sophomore Defensive Tackle Shug Frazier practiced today.
  • The defensive line has a chip on their shoulder to prove people wrong. A lot to do over the next 21 practices, but they are being in and their chemistry is good.
  • Defensive Ends James Smith-Williams and Darian Roseboro have really jumped out in the first four days. The play after play consistency for players who weren’t used to playing play after play.
  • The guys are battling on the inside to see who wants that job. Shug Frazier, Eurndraus Bryant, Val Martin, and Alim McNeil. A lot of guys are getting reps in there.
  • Roseboro is like Finley. He wants to be a high draft pick, and one of the best players at his position in the country. He understands by coming back he’s giving himself that opportunity. There are things that were left on the table that were important to both him and his father. He wants to honor his dad with his play, and wants to finish some things.
