NC State travels to Syracuse to face the Orangemen tomorrow at 2 o’clock. It should be an interesting game featuring some dynamic players, the Cuse are paced by Michael Gbinije who is averaging over 17 points per game. Not only does Gbinije lead the Orangmen in points but he also leads in assists. NC State will have to keep close tabs on him tomorrow, expect Cody Martin to get the assignment. Martin at 6-7 will not be giving up any size on Gbinije, but must keep his focus as the senior has plenty of tricks up his sleeve.

Outside of Gbinije Syracuse looks to senior Trevor Cooney and freshman Malachi Richardson. Both players are averaging 13 points per game, and can get hot from beyond the arc. Cooney has had the reputation as a sharp shooter his whole career, but is only a career 33% shooter from distance. Richardson has had a good start to his college career, the 6-6 freshman has been solid for the Orangemen. On the season he has proven he can score, especially considering he had a season high 23 against UVA. State will need to force him into some tough long two pointers. Run him off the three point line, and then contest.

There are a couple of factors that are going to make this game difficult for the Pack. First off Syracuse has had a week off to prepare. I am sure Jim Boehiem has made great use of the extra time, and will have his trademark 2-3 zone primed and ready to contain Cat Barber. Secondly it is senior night, which means they will play with even greater intensity and energy. State has got to be ready come 2 o’clock to match their energy, if they are not then it could get out of hand quickly. Lastly Syracuse is on the bubble when it comes to the NCAA Tournament, simply put they cannot afford a lost tomorrow.

The Wolfpack must get some help from everyone not named Cat Barber in order to play spoiler. Maverick Rowan needs to be efficient and stretch the 2-3 zone. Cat needs to be aggressive and penetrate the zone and find his teammates. He has to trust that they will make a play. I know that can be difficult especially given the inconsistencies this season, but all he can do is make the right read and let the chips fall where they may. One thing that cannot happen tomorrow is complacency on the offensive end. State cannot just stand around and pass the ball around the key and then settle for long range bombs.

The key for the Pack is to play their game, which is to push the pace. The best way to beat the 2-3 is to attack before it can be set. Once in the half court the Pack must probe the middle, and find ways to get the ball to Abu in good spots to make quick moves. State can play spoiler but they will have to play team ball, that means having multiple guys in double figures, and not needing Cat to score 30 plus.

Tip-Off is scheduled for 2PM and can be seen on ACCN (WRAL).

A post shared by Michael O’Connell (@michaeloc_12)

Today was the final day graduate players could enter the Portal.

This past season, O’Connell averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Wolfpack, starting 22 of the 41 games he played in.

O’Connell took over as NC State’s starting Point Guard on January 30th in a win against Miami.

He only scored in double figures in 9 of his 41 games this season, but 6 of those came in postseason play (5 in the ACC Tournament). O’Connell took things to another level in the ACC Tournament, playing aggressive on the offensive end, looking for his shot, and attacking the rim.

NC State played it’s best basketball of the season when O’Connell was running the show. He ranked 3rd in the ACC in Assist/Turnover Ratio (2.5).

Heading into next season, with a lineup filled with new faces, having the calming presence of a veteran leader like O’Connell is reassuring.

Published

on

ECU Transfer Power Forward Ezra Ausar (6’9″/240) was on an Official Visit to NC State yesterday, and according to analysts at ON3 and 247Sports, things are trending in the right direction for the Wolfpack.

Jamie Shaw of ON3 submitted a prediction for Ausar to eventually commit to NC State yesterday morning.

Cory Smith of 247Sports submitted a crystal ball projection for Ausar to run with the Wolfpack this morning.

Ausar just wrapped up his Sophomore season in Greenville, averaging 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, shooting 51.4% from the field. As a Freshman, he was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team, averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Ausar is a consensus 4-Star prospect in the Transfer Portal, and ON3 ranks him as the #60 overall player in the Portal and the #10 Power Forward.

Originally from Atlanta, Ausar played his Senior Season of High School at Liberty Heights Athletic Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. ON3 ranked Ausar as a 4-Star prospect coming out of high school, the #94 overall player nationally, and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

Ausar has visited Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, met over Zoom with Georgetown, and had an in-home visit with Utah. John Calipari and his staff at Arkansas have been in touch with Ausar, as well as Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, West Virginia, Iowa State and St. John’s. (Link)

At this point, it’s good news that Ausar has no visits scheduled after the visit to NC State.

Ausar has 2 years of eligibility remaining, and NC State currently has 1 scholarship remaining.
