Still sweating…
At one point in the 4th quarter, State found themselves down by 10. Then they took the game and literally ran with it. Pack went on a 20-6 run with the key players being Crutchfield (now appropriately, legally changing her name to Clutchfield) and Cunane, who both scored eight during the span.
Physical Play
We saw State struggle at times against Syracuse, but Georgia Tech amped up the physicality. The normal fast pace State offense was walking the ball up the court far too often, undisciplined with shot selection and seemingly frustrated by non-calls (to be fair…yowza were there some misses). When dealing with the likes of a physical Cubaj, of GT, the Pack needed support from the outside and many times it was missing. Moving forward, they need to find ways to stop opponent’s runs, get offensive boards and make threes (started hot from beyond the arch, before cooling the last three quarters).
Winning without Brown-Turner
Until the latter part of the long State run, Brown-Turner was struggling to make her mark. After finishing the Quarterfinals with two points, with six minutes to go in the game, she only had five. Clearly frustrated, there is some consolation in the fact the Pack can win without playing their best game. Against Louisville and subsequent NCAA play, they’ll need help from everyone.
Seniors Stepping Up
When State needed them the most Crutchfield and Jones stepped up. Crutchfield was the catalyst for the comeback, finishing with 10 points and 5 boards. Jones had moments where she looked to be everywhere on the floor and her statline shows that; 12 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.
Returning to the Finals
State will go up against #1 seed Louisville tomorrow afternoon. Lots on the line; an ACC Championship and a #1 seed in the NCAA tourney. The Pack have made the ACC Final Four, four seasons in a row. Hopefully they can walk away with the hardware for a second straight season.
