When Redshirt Sophomore Nose Tackle Joshua Harris shared these pictures earlier this week on Instagram, I had to do a double take.
Before entering his Senior season at Person County High School, Harris weighed 316 pounds. In his first season at NC State, he weighted 344 pounds. When Covid hit in 2020, his weight crept up to 374.
After looking at these pictures, I jumped over to GoPack.com to see what Harris’ weight was on the roster, and he’s listed at 325.
That’s a 50 pound weight loss.
I reached out to Director of Strength and Conditioning Dantonio Burnette to get his take on Harris’ body transformation:
_______
“Well, it has been a journey, because at his heaviest Josh was 374 pounds during the COVID year (2020 season). Due to the weight gain it was hard for him to have the stamina to help us out in games.
He bought into our plan for him and started to loose some of the weight, but it wasn’t until he found out that he was having a baby girl and got engaged to his fiancé that he sort of really refocused and the weight really begin to fall off.
He changed his mindset and was driven to prove himself right, and not others wrong, and here we stand today with him weighing 324. Last year he was 350+.
He’s a phenomenal person, has a great heart and he’s a huge success story for us especially as it pertains to body transformation. I’ve developed a lot of players over the years and gotten guys bigger, but his weight loss process is one of the biggest changes I’ve seen and I’m proud of him.”

Harris saw action in 11 games last season, registering 10 tackles (0.5 tackles for loss) in 115 snaps. When he was in the game, he played well, grading out at a 74.3 according to ProFootballFocus, which actually was a better grade than starter Corey Durden (68.7). I’m not taking anything away from Durden. He played way more snaps (561), and earned 1st Team All-ACC honors. I’m just making the point that Harris played well when he was in the game, and that was with 25+ more pounds on his frame than he’s carrying now.
Burnette told me that Harris is currently maxing out at 635 pounds on Squat and 430 on Bench. Harris has always been one of the strongest players on the team, but with the weight loss, that strength accompanied by stamina and speed should lead to increased snaps and impact in 2022.
Boy oh boy, recruits will love to hear about the effectiveness of our S&C program.
Exciting to hear he may be a big factor this season.
