NC State 55 Charleston Southern 3: A Few Thoughts and Tidbits

Published

on

The Wolfpack defeated the Buccaneers 55-3 in NC State’s 2022 home opener this afternoon. Here are a few thoughts/notes.

  • Redshirt Junior Quarterback Devin Leary tied the NC State record for touchdown responsibility in a single game, piling up 6 in the game, with 4 through the air and 2 with his legs.
    • He also moved into 6th place all-time in the school record books for career passing yards, passing Terry Harvey.
  • Graduate Wide Receiver Thayer Thomas entered the game ranked 13th in career receiving yards in NC State history, but with his 14 receiving yards today, he passed Chris Coleman and tied Koren Robinson for 11th (1,914).
  • The last time NC State held an opponent to 3 points or less was the season opener in 2021, when the Wolfpack held Furman scoreless in a 45-0 victory.
  • The Wolfpack’s 538 yards of Total Offense is the most they’ve put on the stat sheet since September 7th, 2019, when they put up 540 yards against Western Carolina. Today NC State also tallied 32 first downs. The last time that was done was also in the Western Carolina game in 2019.
  • NC State held Charleston Southern to 150 yards of Total Offense. You guessed it. That’s the lowest the Wolfpack have held an opponent since the Western Carolina game in 2019 (109 yards).
  • The Wolfpack held the Buccaneers to 36 yards rushing today, which is the lowest total since they held Mississippi State to 22 yards in Week 2 last year.
  • Redshirt Freshman Demie Sumo-Karngbaye rushed the ball only 7 times, but rushed for 70 yards, averaging a silly 10 yards per carry. Through 2 collegiate games, Sumo is averaging 7.1 yards per carry.
  • Junior Running Back Jordan Houston caught his first career touchdown on a 24-yard wheel route.
  • Redshirt Sophomore Running Back Delbert Mimms picked up his first career touchdown on a 20-yard pass from Leary.
  • Redshirt Junior Linebacker Payton Wilson was dressed, but didn’t play. Redshirt Sophomore Cornerback Shyheim Battle was in street clothes and didn’t play. Doeren did say he expects both to play next week against Texas Tech.
  • Senior Nickel Tyler Baker-Williams picked up the Wolfpack’s first sack of 2022, for a 13-yard loss. He also had an interception and a forced fumble.
  • Redshirt Freshman Wide Receiver Julian Gray was a more significant part of the offense from the jump. He had 3 receptions (team high) for 34 yards, and was targeted 5 times, which also tied for a team high.
  • The same can also be said for Sophomore Wide Receiver Anthony Smith. He had 2 receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown, and was also targeted 5 times.

Everyone else must be busy celebrating for me to be the first to comment.
My question is … Just how good is ECU? Obviously ECU defense at another level in talent compared to Charleston Southern.
I was impressed with the number of receivers who actually caught passes.
A good confidence builder.
Let’s hope the guys take the next home game serious, because Texas Tech is no ECU, much less Charleston Southern.

ECU beats Old Dominion …. didn’t ODU just beat the pants off VaTech?

CBS Sports Ranks Dave Doeren as 1 of the Top-20 Coaches in College Football

Published

on

CBS Sports released their Top-25 Power 4 Coaches in College Football, and NC State’s Dave Doeren came in at #16. Heading into last season, he went into the season ranked #25.

16) Dave Doeren: The NC State coach finally gets some overdue credit. He’s always hovered around the bottom of our top 25 or just outside it, and now he finds himself firmly entrenched in it thanks to all the changes at the top. Coaches who take mid-tier programs and overachieve never get enough credit, in my estimation, and the consistency Doeren has established at NC State — where he spent most of his time in a division with Clemson and Florida State — is one of the most impressive things any coach in the country has done. I’m glad to see Doeren getting closer to the top 15. 2023 rank: 25 (+9) (CBS Sports)

Numerous CBS Sports’ analysts voted in the poll, and Tom Fornelli actually ranked Doeren #8.

ACC Coaches that made the Top-25

3. Dabo Swinney (Clemson)

8. Mike Norvell (FSU)

16. Dave Doeren (NC State)

19. Jeff Brohm (Louisville)

NC State and UVA Agree to Home-and-Home Non-Conference Games

Published

on

NC State announced this morning that the Wolfpack and UVA will play in a home-and-home non-conference series, with the game in 2025 being in Raleigh, and the game in 2026 being in Charlottesville.

To reiterate, despite the fact that both teams are in the ACC, these games are considered non-conference games, and won’t count toward conference records. This is similar to what UNC and Wake Forest did a few years back.

Here’s what’s interesting about the addition of these games in 2025 and 2026. Prior to the announcement, NC State already had 4 non-conference games scheduled for both years.

It would be my assumption that one of the previously scheduled non-conference games for each season will not take place now.
