Jack Chambers, Drake Thomas & Devan Boykin Spoke with Media After FSU: BULLETED

Published

on

Quarterback Jack Chambers, Linebacker Drake Thomas and Defensive Back Devan Boykin met with the media for their postgame press conference after NC State’s 19-17 victory over FSU on Saturday. You can watch it here, or check out the BULLETED breakdown below.

Drake Thomas

  • We went in at halftime as a defense and were talking, and there was no doubt in our mind.
  • We said ‘we’re going to win this game and shut them out in the second half.’
    • We spoke it into existence, and we went out there and got the job done.
  • I hung out for a little bit [when the lights were out].
    • I was just going through my routine. It didn’t have a huge factor, we just waited a little bit longer.

Devan Boykin

  • There was about 44 seconds left in the game. Coming out of the timeout, we kind of knew that they weren’t going to leave it up to the kicker, that they were going to take a shot at the end zone and try to put us away early.
  • I was expecting verticals. Watching film, we had good preparation in my position group.
    • Shout out to Coach Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay.
      • He prepared us well this week in being aware of certain routes that we’d get.
      • It just happened that they’d scored earlier on that same route, so I kind of knew they’d go back to it.
      • It just came down to making a play on the ball.
  • Obviously, Devin Leary is very crucial to our team, but we’re kind of used to players going down.
    • We have a history of people being injured, but we always have players that are able to step up and make big-time plays in big-time games like Jack did today.
    • We believe highly in Jack. He’s actually my locker-mate, so I talk to him every day.
    • Stepping up in big-time game, that’s just something we expect across the board no matter who goes down.
  • We definitely weren’t down at halftime. Like Drake said, we knew what had to be done.
    • We knew that we were going to come out in the 2nd half and shut those guys out.
    • In the 1st half, we were in our own heads, not getting the job done.
      • We knew we were giving them a lot more yardage than we wanted to.
      • Coming out in the second half, we doubled down and shut them out.
  • After halftime, we knew the game was going to be on us.
    • Especially after Shyheim Battle got that pick, there was probably about 4 minutes left in the game, we knew that we were going to have to come back out and get another stop.
    • We knew the game was going to end on us, and that’s how we wanted it.
  • We were definitely loving on him [Chambers] a lot.
    • He stepped up and made those crucial plays throughout the game that we needed to get us in field goal range and be able to put points on the board.

Jack Chambers

  • It’s definitely a surreal moment being able to be here for this team, do my job, and come out with the victory. It’s exciting to see this team do great things.
  • I was really fine because the 1st thing I did was run. Once you get hit, after the 1st time, you’re good to go.
    • All the nerves are gone. They get beaten out of you.
  • My 1st reaction when Devin went down was, ‘Dang.’
    • That’s a guy I’ve been very close with since I’ve been here.
    • He’s like a brother to me now. I just wanted to make sure he’s all right.
  • Then, I’ve got to step up and do my job, do what I came here to do.
    • I knew my team had my back.
    • My O-line, my running backs, and my defense, I knew what they were going to do, so we just had to step up and do our jobs.
  • It definitely feels amazing. Any time you can get a victory, it’s a great feeling, especially against a great Florida State team.
    • It’s about working and making sure our guys have the best position to put our kicker out there.
    • Christopher Dunn did an amazing job sealing the game for us.
    • Then, defense closing the game was just incredible. It’s the best feeling I’ve experienced in my college career.
  • The guys already know I’ve played a lot of football.
    • Actually, they came up and talked to me.
    • They were like, ‘Hey, we’ve got you. Do what you’ve been doing for 12 years.’
    • They were joking around and keeping it cool and light.
    • They knew I played a lot of football. I just had to go in there and play my game.

Proposed Bill in the NC House Would Require NC State & UNC To Play One Another, as well as ECU, UNCC and App St.

Published

on

A bill has been proposed by members of the North Carolina House of Representatives that would force NC State and UNC to play one another, as well as East Carolina, UNC Charlotte and Appalachian State.

According to House Bill 965, which you can read here in full, NC State and UNC would be required to play one another annually in Football, Men’s Basketball and Women’s Basketball. The Wolfpack and the Tar Heels would also be forced to play a game annually in all three sports against either ECU, UNC-Charlotte or App St. Every six years, NC State and UNC would be required to have played a home and away game against each of the three school in all three sports.

Here’s the exact wording from the proposed bill:

Competition Required. – A high-enrollment institution shall do all of the following in each eligible sport: (1) Every academic year, play at least one home or one away game against (i) another high-enrollment institution and (ii) an eligible constituent institution that is not a high-enrollment institution. (2) Every six academic years, play at least one home and one away game against each eligible constituent institution that is not a high-enrollment institution. A high-enrollment institution shall alternate home and away games that are scheduled against the same eligible constituent institution that is not a high-enrollment institution.

For glossary of terms being referenced above:

For the purposes of this bill, “High-enrollment institutions” = NC State and UNC, while “Eligible constituent institutions” = East Carolina, UNC Charlotte and Appalachian State.

It’s worth noting that NC State already has games schedule against each of these teams home-and-away in Football between now and 2031.

2025 – East Carolina (H)

2025 – @ App St.

2026 – App St. (H)

2028 – @ East Carolina

2030 – Charlotte (H)

2031 – @ Charlotte

Akron Safety Kerry Martin Jr. will Take an Official Visit at NC State Next Week

Published

on

Akron Safety Kerry Martin Jr. (6’1″/195) confirmed with me that he will be taking an Official Visit to NC State next week beginning on May 7th.

After receiving an offer from NC State yesterday, it didn’t take him long to set up the visit.

Martin Jr. is familiar with NC State, because he was recruited by Wolfpack Defensive Coordinator Tony Gibson before he left West Virginia to come to Raleigh. Even though he never coached him, a relationship was established.

Martin Jr.’s connections to NC State are deeper than that. Former NC State Cornerback Derrek Pitts, who is currently a member of the Tampa Bay Bucs, is his cousin.

This past year, Martin Jr. recorded 45 tackles, 2 interceptions and 6 pass breakups for Akron, starting in 9 of the 11 games he played in. His PFF Grade was 68.9.

In 2022, he had 53 tackles, 1 interception and 1 pass breakup, starting in 9 of the 11 games he played in. Martin Jr.’s PFF Grade was 60.9.

In 2019, as a Freshman for West Virginia, Martin Jr. earned PFF Freshman All-American honors, recording a grade of 70.6, with 50 tackles and 3 pass breakups.
