NC State Quarterback Devin Leary Out for the Remainder of the Season

Well, earlier in the week, Wolfpack Head Coach Dave Doeren said that Quarterback Devin Leary wouldn’t require surgery, but NC State just released via their Twitter account that further imaging revealed that surgery to repair a torn pectoral muscle would be the best course of action. As a result, the season is over for the Redshirt Junior Quarterback who was the ACC Preseason Player of the Year.

The good news, it was a torn pec instead of a torn shoulder. I know that might not seem like good news, but the fact Leary didn’t tear his throwing shoulder is good news for his future.

No one expected Leary to be back next year, but you have to imagine this could change his plans. Technically, Leary is a Redshirt Junior this year, and has another year of eligibility in 2023.

After having the year that he had in 2021, Leary hasn’t improved his draft prospects in 2022. It wouldn’t be shocking at all to me to see Leary back in 2023.

This is gut-wrenching news for Leary and for the Wolfpack’s 2022 season. For the 2nd time in his career, Leary has been knocked out for the remainder of a season due to being hit in the pocket, breaking his fibula in 2020.

It will be interesting to see how Dave Doeren and his staff bring this team together for the remainder of the season. They have a defense that has the ability to keep NC State in the game, no matter who is at Quarterback.

Jack Chambers has been Leary’s backup all season, and is the first in line, and easily the Quarterback with the most experience, but I expect we will see some of True Freshman M.J. Morris as well. The coaches are going to put the Quarterback in the game that gives the Wolfpack the best chance to win the rest of the way, and who that is will be determined starting today at Syracuse.

We are praying for Devin Leary!
