Old Dominion Safety Robert Kennedy III committed to run with the Wolfpack yesterday, and I was able to catch up with him to get his thoughts on his decision.
When I entered the Transfer Portal, there was just really one thing that I wanted to find, and that was a coach that could polish me for the NFL. I feel like my game is great, but I feel like it could be really great. I feel like with Coach Lindsay (Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay/Nickels Coach), he’s really detailed, and you need the details for the NFL, and I feel like I’m missing some details. I feel like it’s a good match. It was a no brainer for sure.
Through all of my experiences, I feel like I’m wiser. It’s made me a smart football player. I’ve been in 4 or 5 different defensive schemes. I know how to talk to the younger guys, the older guys, as well as the coaches.
I’m going to put my head down and work, and once they see how hard I work and how dedicated I am, that’s when vocal leadership starts happening.
They want me to play Nickel, and I’m going to be playing some Free Safety too. Having 5 Defensive Back’s on the field, and me being able to play all 5 positions, I feel like it’s a great thing.
On my Official Visit, I was just really paying attention to the coaches and players. I was in a position meeting with Coach Lindsay, and I saw the way he coached, and that was one of the main things I wanted to see. I was able to go to the bowl practice, and I wanted to see how he coached, how he was with the players. I saw a bunch of kids that really love football, and that was a great feeling, because nowadays, kids don’t really love football. I was really shocked to see a lot of the stuff that I saw. To see younger guys really bought in, you can’t really match that at other schools to be honest.
Coach Doeren is just a cool dude. I went to go dab him up, and dude just gave me a hug. Coaches will show love, but he was letting it be known that ‘we need your help, but you also need out help.’ A lot of coaches don’t do that. He’s a good dude, and I heard nothing but good things about him. He really loves football too, and that’s not easy to come by either.
The thing I want to work on the most this offseason is sharpening up my press coverage. At ODU I didn’t really press much.
The defense at NC State is a bunch of dogs. When Coach Gibson was in my grandmas living room, he’s like ‘No matter what, even if we’re up 50-0, he still wants to get interceptions, and is still going to call blitzes. When your Defensive Coordinator is a dog too, it’s just infectious. Everybody there wants to win, and you can tell. It’s easy to see.
Mr. Kennedy… may I suggest that you go into marketing after your NFL career. That’s one hell of an add for our program!
