NC State Freshman Report: Redshirt or No Redshirt?

Published

on

NC State brought in 14 True Freshmen from the high school ranks in 2023. Four of them aren’t eligibile to redshirt, because they have played in 5+ games. Eight of the 14 have seen the field, leaving five that didn’t. Nine True Freshmen are able to redshirt this season.

If a player plays in 5 games in a season, they are no longer eligible to redshirt the year, but playing in a bowl game doesn’t count towards that number. As a result, it will be interesting to see if any True Freshman see the field in the Wolfpack bowl game that haven’t seen it thus far, or see snaps from the line of scrimmage, instead of strictly Special Teams.

Not Eligible to Redshirt

WR Kevin Concepcion – KC has been one of the best True Freshman in NC State history. He led the Wolfpack in receptions, receiving yards and touchdown receptions. Concepcion broke the school record for receptions and touchdown receptions by a Freshman. His PFF Grade of 78.4 is the highest on NC State’s offense. Concepcion has played in all 12 game, logging 511 snaps, which is the 2nd most by a Wolfpack Wide Receiver, trailing only Captain Keyon Lesane.

DB Brandon Cisse – Cisse and Concepcion are the only two True Freshmen to play in all 12 games so far. In 130 snaps, Cisse has 9 tackles and 1 interception, recording a PFF grade of 69.6, which is the 8th highest on the defense.

RB Kendrick Raphael – Raphael has played in 10 games for the Wolfpack as a True Freshman, carrying the ball 60 times for 289 yards and a touchdown. He also had 7 receptions for 66 yards. Raphael played in 242 snaps and earned a grade of 63.8. Even though Raphael ranks third on the team in rushing yards (trailing Brennan Armstrong (544) and Kevin Concepcion (297)), he has the most rushing yards of any Wolfpack Running Back.

TE Juice Vereen – Juice has seen action in 10 games in his first year in Raleigh, catching 4 passes for 65 yards, all of which came in the Wolfpack’s loss to Notre Dame. Vereen played in 105 snaps in 10 games, and earned a PFF Grade of 52.4.

Eligible to Redshirt (Logged Playing Time)

LB Kamal Bonner – Even though Bonner has already played in 4 games (6 snaps), recording 3 tackles. In two of the games, he played strictly on Special Teams. He can still play in the bowl game and not burn his redshirt, because bowl games are an exception.

S Zack Myers – Myers has played in 4 games, all on Special Teams, recording no snaps on defense. He can still play in the bowl game and not burn his redshirt, because bowl games are an exception.

DE Isaiah Shirley – In a move of creativity, Shirley was brought in against Virginia Tech and UNC as a blocking Tight End, playing 27 snaps between the two contests.

Eligible to Redshirt (Did not Play)

QB Lex Thomas
OL Darion Rivers
OL Kamen Smith
OL Rico Jackson
OL Obadiah Obasuyi
LB Kelvin McBride

Akron Safety Kerry Martin Jr. will Take an Official Visit at NC State Next Week

Published

on

Akron Safety Kerry Martin Jr. (6’1″/195) confirmed with me that he will be taking an Official Visit to NC State next week beginning on May 7th.

After receiving an offer from NC State yesterday, it didn’t take him long to set up the visit.

Martin Jr. is familiar with NC State, because he was recruited by Wolfpack Defensive Coordinator Tony Gibson before he left West Virginia to come to Raleigh. Even though he never coached him, a relationship was established.

Martin Jr.’s connections to NC State are deeper than that. Former NC State Cornerback Derrek Pitts, who is currently a member of the Tampa Bay Bucs, is his cousin.

This past year, Martin Jr. recorded 45 tackles, 2 interceptions and 6 pass breakups for Akron, starting in 9 of the 11 games he played in. His PFF Grade was 68.9.

In 2022, he had 53 tackles, 1 interception and 1 pass breakup, starting in 9 of the 11 games he played in. Martin Jr.’s PFF Grade was 60.9.

In 2019, as a Freshman for West Virginia, Martin Jr. earned PFF Freshman All-American honors, recording a grade of 70.6, with 50 tackles and 3 pass breakups.

Battle had 1 year of eligibility remaining, but declared for the NFL Draft on January 3rd.

He finished this past year as the most experienced player on the Wolfpack’s defense, starting in 41 of the 51 games he has played in dating back to 2019. In a rarity in this day-and-age, Battle was a 4-year starter at the Cornerback position for NC State. He graduated with a degree in Communications.
