#18 NC State is facing a dangerous #25 Kansas State team this evening, but quite a few of their dangerous pieces are missing.
Who is missing?
For starters, starting Quarterback Will Howard entered the Portal, opening the door for Freshman Avery Johnson to start today.
This season, Howard earned 2nd Team All-Big 12 honors. In 12 games, he threw for 2,643 yards and 24 touchdowns (10 interceptions). Howard also rushed for 351 yards and 9 touchdowns. His PFF grade was 77.7, ranking 5th on Kansas State’s offense.
The Wildcats will also be without their top two receivers this season. Junior Tight End Ben Sinnott, who earned 1st Team All-Big 12 honors, announced he was entering the NFL Draft on December 12th. Sinnott led K-State in receiving yards (676) and touchdown receptions (6). They will also be without Senior Phillip Brooks, who led the team with 53 receptions, and was 2nd in receiving yards (589) and touchdown receptions (5). Sinnott’s PFF grade was 82.0 and Brooks’ grade was 71.6, ranking 3rd and 7th respectively on Kansas State’s offense.
They will be without their backup Running Back Treshaun Ward, who just transferred to Boston College. Ward rushed for 643 yards, which ranked 2nd on the team, averaging 5.2 yards per carry.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Wildcats will be without starting Cornerback Will Lee III, who was the highest graded player on their defense (76.2). He had 42 tackles, 2 interceptions and 6 pass breakups. Lee entered the Portal, and followed Collin Klein, former Wildcats Offensive Coordinator, to Texas A&M.
They will also be without starting Safety Kobe Savage, who earned 2nd Team All-Big 12 honors this season. Savage had 57 tackles (3rd on the team) and 3 interceptions (led the team). His PFF grade was 68.2, which ranked 10th on the team. Savage has transferred to Oregon.
Who remains dangerous?
Howard is out at Quarterback, but Freshman Avery Johnson is the next man up, who happens to be one of the most highly touted Quarterback recruits to commit to Kansas State in quite some time.
Johnson played in 7 games this season, completing 25 of 35 passes for 301 yards and 3 touchdowns, with no interceptions. He also rushed the ball for 225 yards and 6 touchdowns, averaging 5.0 yards per carry.
Out of high school, ESPN ranked Johnson as the #77 overall player nationally, the #3 dual threat Quarterback, and the #1 player in the state of North Carolina. Rivals ranked him as the #1 dual threat Quarterback.
The Wolfpack will also have to find a way to stop Sophomore Running Back DJ Giddens, who has rushed for 1,075 yards and 9 touchdowns, which are both team highs. Giddens’ PFF grade of 83.8 is the highest grade on the Wildcats offense. He also has 28 receptions for 286 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Freshman Jayce Brown is the only receiver remaining with 20+ receptions, catching 22 passes for 385 yards and 2 touchdowns. His PFF grade of 73.2 ranks 6th on the team.
On the Offensive Line, Left Guard Cooper Beebe earned 1st Team All-Big 12 honors, and was named Offensive Lineman of the Year in the conference. His PFF grade of 82.6 ranks 2nd on the team.
On defense, Defensive End Khalid Duke and Linebacker Austin Moore both earned 2nd Team All-Big 12 honors. Duke has 8 tackles for loss and 6 sacks. Moore ranks 2nd on the team in tackles (59), and is the leader in tackles for loss (12.5). Duke’s PFF grade of 73.4 ranks 4th on the team. Moore’s grade is 56.9.
Also, Junior Free Safety Marques Sigle is still around, and he is the team leader in tackles (60) and pass breakups (7). His PFF grade of 74.2 is 2nd on the team.
