Savage Wolves just announced that Safety Devan Boykin will be returning to NC State in 2024 for his final year of eligibility.

Boykin was the Wolfpack’s starter in 2023 at Strong Safety, starting in 10 of the 11 games he played in. He ranked 4th on the team in tackles (54), and was tied for the team lead with 3 interceptions. Boykin’s PFF grade of 71.2 ranked 6th on the Wolfpack’s defense. Believe it or not, no one was better at stopping the run on NC State’s defense than Boykin, whose 90 PFF Grade on Run Defense was best on the team. His Tackling Grade of 82.1 ranked 4th.

Dating back to 2020, Boykin has started in 19 of the 45 games he has played in.

While I didn’t expect Boykin to leave for the NFL yet, it wasn’t certain that he would return. To bring back a player for a 5th year at the school he started with is a lost art in college football. Bringing back a starter who has played all 1,419 snaps at NC State is special in the world of college football today.

Next year NC State returns both of their starting Safeties: Devan Boykin at Free Safety and Sean Brown (2 years of eligibility left) at Strong Safety. They are also expected to return Bishop Fitzgerald (1 year of eligibility left), who rotated at both Safety positions in 2023. Boykin has already graduated with his degree in Sports Management.

Huge news for the Wolfpack!
