NC State Wins Series Opener Against Towson with Walk-Off Hit from Lanphere

NC State never trailed in their series opener against Towson yesterday, but it took a walk-off hit by Redshirt Freshman Catcher Drew Lanphere to seal the deal.

After a rough start in Hawaii, Senior Sam Highfill pitched a great game yesterday, giving up 1 earned run over 5 innings (84 pitches). He struck out 5 batters, and only walked 1.

The Wolfpack scored 6 runs, but all of the runs were off of singles. Not one of NC State’s 8 hits went for extra bases. SR 1B Garrett Pennington, SR 3B Alec Makarewicz and FR C Drew Lanphere all recorded 2 hits in the game, with A-Mak and Lanphere driving in 2 runs each.

Lanphere got the start at Catcher once again because JR Jacob Cozart was being careful with a groin injury, and FR Alex Sosa is finding his way back from mono. It is encouraging that Cozart pinch hit in the game.

JR Chase Nixon got the start at DH, and knocked in 2 runs himself.

Freshman Jacob Dudan only threw 2 pitches, but it was enough to pick up the first Win of his collegiate career.

The pitching staff pitched with control yesterday, striking out 9, and walking only 1 as a unit. It is unfortunate that the Wolfpack’s mistakes put runs on the board once again. Two of Towson’s 5 runs were unearned.

The Wolfpack and Towson will play in a double header tomorrow, with the first game kicking off at Noon.
