NC State and #4 UNC will tipoff at 8:30pm tonight in the ACC Championship game on ESPN.
This will be the 7th time that the two rivals will face one another in the ACC Tournament Title Game. A Wolfpack vs. Tar Heels Championship is the 2nd most frequent pairing in the Championship Game in Tournament history.
Here are a few keys for an NC State victory over UNC tonight.
Defensively
Don’t let the Tar Heels get out in transition. In the 13-point loss in PNC Arena, UNC scored 18 fast break points, compared to NC State’s 8.
Let Elliot Cadeau shoot. In the 9-point loss at Chapel Hill, his ability to get in the paint and score at the rim killed the Wolfpack’s momentum every time. He had 15 points in that game, making 5 of his 7 shots .
Box out Harrison Ingram. It hasn’t been RJ Davis that has killed the Pack this year. In Game 1, Ingram had 19 boards, and in Game 2 he had 22 points. Diarra is playing better defense as of late, which will hopefully translate to a decrease in Ingram’s output.
Keep the Tar Heels off of the free throw line. Last time out, UNC made 23 of their 27 free throw attempts. That’s way too many free throws.
Offensively
Attack the basket and get to the free throw line. UNC is solid defensively. Don’t settle for ill advised perimeter shots. Keep whipping the ball around in the half court. Work the pick-and-roll.
A guard besides DJ Horne needs to step up. Casey Morsell hasn’t been the perimeter shooter this season that we are accustomed to. Through two games against the Tar Heels this season, he is 0-7 from three. If he turns that around tonight, it will be a key to victory.
Feed the post. DJ Burns hasn’t played well against UNC this year, but they need to ride his momentum from yesterday. Burns has averaged 8.5 points per game in his two games against UNC this year. Bacot is a heck of a defender, but if the Pack feeds the post, and gets him in foul trouble, it will be a key to victory. NC State is known for their guard play, but it was Burns, Middlebrooks and Diarra that willed the Pack to victory yesterday. Why not two days in a row?
First of all, congrats to Keatts. Almost all of us wanted him fired and he proved us wrong. I’m sooo pumped. First ACC Championship in my lifetime. Leeeets Goooooo Pack!!!!!
LOL. Some may have, and you weren’t just proven wrong, but proven to be a bandwagon rider, and not to be trusted to support the team and coach when times are tough. Don’t even try to celebrate with those that stood behind them.
Well this is a ridiculous comment. Fans shouldn’t be shamed for demanding results and wanting to move on from people when they fall short of those results. In fact if you are not demanding results then what do you care about how they perform? If you saw my previous comments I’ve made it clear I like Keatts and that I even thought he was a good coach but that he wasn’t getting the job done. Up to this point he hadn’t been. 17-14 is not a good season. I still watched every game and was rooting for us to win… Read more »
My comments are for those that disrespectfully campaigned against KK after every loss or every time things didn’t go well. Wait till season is over then present your thoughts in a respectful manner. Repeated campaigning for a firing is just trolling, and in retrospect makes those folks look like fools as well. True, that behavior says a lot more about them than it ever did about KK or the team.
quotes like ‘MOC should never play again’ come to mind.
I”m sure those same folks will jump off the bandwagon the next time we hit a rough patch.

Only one key, score more points than the Holes. No matter how you do it, just score more points than the Holes.
NC State’s Men’s Basketball team has picked up 4 players from the Transfer Portal this offseason, and the class ranks 10th nationally according to ON3, and 15th nationally according to 247Sports.
Andy Katz is beginning to make his rounds for his Offseason Convo series, and he took the time to meet with NC State Head Coach Kevin Keatts.
In their conversation, Keatts talked about what this run has meant to Raleigh and the Wolfpack fans, how it has helped sell the program the way it deserves to be in recruiting, and even how it helped and hurt in the world of the Transfer Portal.
Today was the final day graduate players could enter the Portal.
This past season, O’Connell averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Wolfpack, starting 22 of the 41 games he played in.
O’Connell took over as NC State’s starting Point Guard on January 30th in a win against Miami.
He only scored in double figures in 9 of his 41 games this season, but 6 of those came in postseason play (5 in the ACC Tournament). O’Connell took things to another level in the ACC Tournament, playing aggressive on the offensive end, looking for his shot, and attacking the rim.
NC State played it’s best basketball of the season when O’Connell was running the show. He ranked 3rd in the ACC in Assist/Turnover Ratio (2.5).
Heading into next season, with a lineup filled with new faces, having the calming presence of a veteran leader like O’Connell is reassuring.
ECU Transfer Power Forward Ezra Ausar (6’9″/240) was on an Official Visit to NC State yesterday, and according to analysts at ON3 and 247Sports, things are trending in the right direction for the Wolfpack.
Jamie Shaw of ON3 submitted a prediction for Ausar to eventually commit to NC State yesterday morning.
Cory Smith of 247Sports submitted a crystal ball projection for Ausar to run with the Wolfpack this morning.
Ausar just wrapped up his Sophomore season in Greenville, averaging 11.4 points and 4.7 rebounds, shooting 51.4% from the field. As a Freshman, he was named to the AAC All-Freshman Team, averaging 9.8 points and 5.3 rebounds.
Ausar is a consensus 4-Star prospect in the Transfer Portal, and ON3 ranks him as the #60 overall player in the Portal and the #10 Power Forward.
Originally from Atlanta, Ausar played his Senior Season of High School at Liberty Heights Athletic Institute in Charlotte, North Carolina. ON3 ranked Ausar as a 4-Star prospect coming out of high school, the #94 overall player nationally, and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.
Ausar has visited Seton Hall, Georgia Tech, met over Zoom with Georgetown, and had an in-home visit with Utah. John Calipari and his staff at Arkansas have been in touch with Ausar, as well as Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Arizona State, West Virginia, Iowa State and St. John’s. (Link)
At this point, it’s good news that Ausar has no visits scheduled after the visit to NC State.
Ausar has 2 years of eligibility remaining, and NC State currently has 1 scholarship remaining.
