PI EXCLUSIVE: NC State is at the Top for 3-Star OL Toby Mealer

Published

on

3-Star 2025 Offensive Lineman Toby Mealer (6’5″/330) was at NC State’s 2024 Spring Game this past Saturday. I caught up with him to get his toughts.

What were your overall thoughts of the game? What excited you about the way this team played?

My first thoughts on the game was just how powerful the offense looked in the game. The run game is top notch. Great backs with speed and power. Of course I focus mainly on the O-Line, and I thought they used numerous techniques well to control their defender and did a great job of moving to the second level to open holes. Very impressive in the Pass game as well. Very well coached unit. They know their assignment and they get it done!

Who stood out you from the game?

As far as who stood out, of course the O-Line. Both Tackles have great feet and both are great players. Because I play Tackle I really focus on those positions the most. Having said that CJ Bailey is a freak. If I get the chance, I can’t wait to block for him! Big time athlete.

Did you get to interact with any of the players? Do you have any relationships with any of the Wolfpack players?

I got a chance to watch film with the O-Line during the week, so I got to meet a few of the guys. Not really any in depth conversations, as they were pretty busy getting coached up, but they were nice guys for sure. I don’t have any relationships with the O-Line yet but hope to build that during the process.

What were your interactions with the Coaches like?

The Coaches were great. They were different than any staff I’ve dealt with to this point. Very business like. They didn’t tell you only the good stuff about you that they saw. They talked about getting better.

Coach Doeren I really appreciated. He talked about diet, working out and commitment! Coaches always ask you where do you want to go. They want you to say to the NFL. Coach Doeren said I’m not gonna ask you that. He said show me don’t tell me! That was huge with myself and my Dad who was along on the visit. Coach Doeren is a guy you want to play for, believe me.

Coach Tujague is so impressive. I love his teaching style. He relates to his players and I truly believe they enjoy playing for him. During film, when he asked guys questions, they knew the answer. Nobody was lost. On the field I didn’t see guys not knowing assignments. All the corrections from coach to player were technique. I came away believing they were very well coached. I had quite a few talks with Coach Tujague and he asks a lot of questions. He wants you to do the same. He is a thinker and he wants the same I feel from his guys. I was very impressed.

Where does NC State currently in your recruitment?

NC State is at the top. I have an Official Visit in June (7-9), and I am hoping to get my mom out there before that if possible. My dad and I came away very impressed with the entire staff. Not to mention we loved the campus and atmosphere. Go Pack!

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
