Surprise! Pack, Anya Shock LSU 66-65

Published

on

LSU took a 21-20 lead over the Pack with 8:30 in the first half. NC State would not get the lead back until Beejay Anya hit the improbable game winning left handed hook with .01 left on the clock.

Unbelievable. That’s really the only way to describe it. The Pack looked beat for most of this basketball game. The Tigers were setting the pace, owning the boards and getting the crowd going with highlight reel dunk after dunk. But State never went away. Barber and Abu kept them in it with 17 and 13 respectively and Kyle Washington made a rare appearance that really gave his team a spark down the stretch.

Washington has lost a lot of his playing time to Lennard Freeman over last half of the season, but he never pouted and knew his chance would come. When it did, he didn’t disappoint. His stretch of tip in dunk, blocked shot, 3 pointer and assist to Abu for a dunk, not only energized State but it also cut their deficit from 9 to 4.

But State didn’t really take over this basketball game. To be honest, this game was gifted to them. LSU hit their last FG with 10:24 left in the game. Yes, you read that correctly. In fact, they only scored 5 points over the final 10 minutes of the game. They were all FTs. Even with that, the Pack needed the Tigers to miss their final 5 FTs and hit an improbably left handed hook by Anya to survive and advance. Lets take a closer look at what happened:

It wasn’t the bigs that killed State, it was the LSU guards
I know that above statement seems wrong when you look at the stats, but it’s not. State’s perimeter defense was plain awful. Not only did they give up 17 points to guard Tim Quarterman (who only averages 11) They jumped at ball fakes, allowed penetration and didn’t recover around screens. This created all kinds of havoc down low. The bigs needed to help and this was one of those games where State’s help and recover defense was just sooo slow. This is where the bigs were really getting a lot of their points. When Mickey and Martin were posting up Abu and Anya, they really didn’t have much success. It was when they were forced to help, or when the Pack guards turned it over and allowed the Tigers to get into transition that they really hurt State. This is not about talent or quickness, this is about ‘want to.’ from the Wolfpack guards. It’s about getting down in a stance and really locking down. No reaching, no jumping, just good old fashion position defense.

Barber and Abu Kept State Afloat
Lacey and Turner have carried NC State all year, but tonight the shots weren’t falling. This was a little dissapointing for me. These two guys are your leaders, your upper classmen and the guys who should come ready. They didn’t. Sure, Lacey did hit a few big ones down the stretch and Ralston his a few early, but in the end, these guys did not give Gottfried the type of focus and ‘refuse to lose’ attitude that is needed. Instead is was underclassmen Cat Barber and Malik Abu who carried the weight. Barber had 17 (7-16) and Abu added 13 (5-7 shooting) to keep the game close. Against Villanova, State is going to need all of their weapons.

Washington Makes His Mark
Say what you want about Kyle Washington, but the guy brings it. His intensity and his hustle can’t be questioned and is something the Pack has really been missing. Sure, he shoots nearly every time he touches it on the wing, sure he leaves much to be desired with his position defense, but Washington kind of saved State on this night. His tip in dunk, his 3 and his assist to Abu really changed things, but it was his intensity that finally had his team believing.

The Hook
Of course State would go to Lacey on the final shot, but as you can see, teams have figured this out. Lacey was draped by a defender that was not going to go for his pump fake. He finally elevated for his shot, but a hand was right in his face. This is when he dropped it off to Anya, hoping to get it right back. But Beejay had seen enough of the guards missing on this night. He took the ball and backed down the lane, then with 2 seconds left, he took a left handed hook, it hung on the rim, and finally fell…sending the Pack to the next round.

Next up is #1 Nova on Saturday at 7pm on TBS. We’ll have much more on that coming up…

Wolfer96 Is it the Les Robinson, Lee Fowler,  Sendek, or Lowe curse?

PackJunky wolfpack74 Caleb did a good job tonight.  My man, Lee, finally got to play.  His defense is so good.  If Turner could play on defense like Lee, he would be really good.  Our bigs came to play and did a fantastic job.  Go pack.

It felt so weird to be on the good side of luck. As a State fan we’ve been screwed so many times by bad calls, half court shots that steal a win away from us, inexplicable breakdown at the FT line late in the game (last season), etc. And to be on the receiving end of the opponent’s failures is just weird. We had no business winning that game. We lost practically every statistical category. They out-physicaled us, the refs screwed us several times, Turner and Lacey went 8 for 29, LSU ran a dunk drill on us in the… Read more »

wolfpack74 PackJunky Well there is more to being useful than scoring. He is one of our absolute best defenders, he is a good passer, a good rebounder for a wing, and he is super aggressive. Last night, he had a bad game. He is still figuring things out as a freshman. I could ask the same question about Kyle… if Kyle is so useful why hasnt he had more playing time lately? Well I think both of them are very useful, it’s just that we have a ton of depth and we need the right fit for the matchups we encounter.… Read more »

Wolfer96 wolfpack74 Can’t relax.  We need to win more so our recruiting does falter anymore than it has so far this year.  Yes, they have overachieved again, but that game last night was almost as bad as the last Duke game.  If LSU had any discipline and floor leadership,  we would have lost by 20 or more.

PackJunky If he is so useful then why didn’t he get more playing time last night?  He has scored 17 points in the last five games, shooting about 22%, 20% for 3’s.  I will give him one thing, he has 3 times the turnovers vs 3 pts field goals lately.  I would just like to see Cody get more playing time when it means something.  Caleb has always been rated higher than Cody, and I don’t see it.  I believe if  you play one then play both at the same time.  They have played that way their entire life.

If you think Caleb is useless you haven’t been watching this team all year, or you don’t know much about basketball.

wolfpack74  Gott definitely made the adjustments at half time. The key was the team playing more physical. It started with Dez getting all into Quarterman who was killing us all game. Then the rest of the team started matching that intensity.  We continued to give up some offensive rebounds but not the put back dunk kind that really hurt us in the 1st half. Anya will get all the press which is well deserved but Kyle had several plays that really got us back in the game. I just want to know what was going on with Lacey? He just… Read more »

I mean this is it. This is the end of the road if you don’t bring all that you’ve got. Gott needs to somehow use this game as motivation for Nova. I didn’t like how the guys came out in the 1st half. The transition D was just awful. Guys were fumbling the ball or turning the ball over. We left too many guys open on 3’s. To beat Nova this team will have to come out with razor sharp focus. Hopefully they shook off the tourney jitters this game. Now that the 1st game is out of the way… Read more »

Gott got smart or desperate.  He took out that useless Caleb and replaced him with Kyle.  Smart move to use Lee as well.  Lacey looks dead tired,  CAT still has energy.  Go pack for one more.

The Roster for the NC State Men’s Basketball Team is all but Set Heading into 2024-25

Published

on

NC State does have 1 scholarship available, and could still add a player out of the Transfer Portal. With that being said, the roster for the Men’s Basketball team is pretty much set for the 2024-25 season.

Non-graduates had to enter the Transfer Portal by April 30th, and Graduates had to enter by May 1st. Jayden Taylor and Michael O’Connell both made public announcements that they were returning, but the closure of entrance to the Portal means that Breon Pass, Ben Middlebrooks, Dennis Parker Jr. and MJ Rice are all set to return next season.

In a world where the Transfer Portal has all but become free agency in College Basketball, with some players switching schools on an annual basis, it’s encouraging that Kevin Keatts not only recruited a Top-10 Transfer Class, but also recruited a majority of the eligible players to stay. Three players that could transfer entered the Portal (I’m not counting Mohamed Diarra in these numbers, who opted to go pro), while 6 opted to continue running with the Wolfpack.

As a result, below is a breakdown of the roster for the NC State Men’s Basketball team heading into 2024-25, realizing the Wolfpack could still add one player (this team is deep).

1 year of Eligibility

Guard Michael O’Connell
Guard Marcus Hill
Guard Breon Pass
Guard/Forward Jayden Taylor
Forward/Guard Dontrez Styles
Forward Ben Middlebrooks
Center Brandon Huntley-Hatfield

2 Years of Eligibility

Guard/Forward MJ Rice
Guard Mike James
Guard Jordan Snell (Walk-On)
Guard KJ Keatts (Walk-On)

3 Years of Eligibility

Guard/Forward Dennis Parker Jr.

4 Years of Eligibility

Guard Paul McNeil
Guard Trey Parker

NC State’s 2024 4-Man Transfer Class

Center Brandon Huntley-Hatfield (Louisville)

Guard/Forward Dontez Styles (Georgetown)

Guard Mike James (Louisville)

Guard Marcus Hill (Bowling Green)

NC State still has a chance to move up in the rankings. East Carolina Power Forward Ezra Ausar just wrapped up an Official Visit to NC State, and things are looking good for the Wolfpack. ON3 ranks Ausar as the #67 overall player in the Portal, and the #15 Power Forward.

Guard Mike O’Connell Announces He Will Play His Final Year of Eligibility at NC State

Published

Guard Michael O’Connell announced today that he will be playing his final year of eligibility at NC State next season.

A post shared by Michael O’Connell (@michaeloc_12)

Today was the final day graduate players could enter the Portal.

This past season, O’Connell averaged 5.7 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Wolfpack, starting 22 of the 41 games he played in.

O’Connell took over as NC State’s starting Point Guard on January 30th in a win against Miami.

He only scored in double figures in 9 of his 41 games this season, but 6 of those came in postseason play (5 in the ACC Tournament). O’Connell took things to another level in the ACC Tournament, playing aggressive on the offensive end, looking for his shot, and attacking the rim.

NC State played it’s best basketball of the season when O’Connell was running the show. He ranked 3rd in the ACC in Assist/Turnover Ratio (2.5).

Heading into next season, with a lineup filled with new faces, having the calming presence of a veteran leader like O’Connell is reassuring.
