NC State’s Torin Dorn Talks at ACC Media Day: TRANSCRIPT

Published

on

Senior Torn Dorn took the podium today as one of NC State’s two representatives at ACC Media Day today. Here’s a TRANSCRIPT of what he had to say:

Q. We try not to talk a lot about last year during this event. But in that overtime win, given the family history that you have with North Carolina and Chapel Hill, what was it like for family going into that game, and then what was the conversation coming out of that game?

TORIN DORN: Having family ties to the rivalry, I think a lot of people will look at it and think it’s a riff inside the family, but, no. It’s really they’re very supportive of me and the things that I’m doing. So when we’re winning, they’re happy. When my brother’s playing and he’s winning, they’re happy. They’re really supportive of our team and coach, and everything that we’re doing. So it was definitely fun for them to see us win after the loss that we suffered the year before.

Q. Torin, same question for you, a Vance graduate, so you’re right at home as well.

TORIN DORN: Definitely. It’s always fun coming home and being in the spectrum center and seeing familiar faces and people that work here that I’ve known growing up and things like that. So it’s definitely fun and something that I take a lot of pride in.

Q. Torin, in your two years in the ACC your numbers have jumped from a scoring perspective both in league play and overall. Do you expect another elevation this year? Is there still more to your game? And I know points on the only thing, but what is the next level for you?

TORIN DORN: I definitely think the next level for me is becoming more of a leader on this team. I think with a lot of new pieces, a lot of young guys, I think myself stepping out of my comfort zone and being more of a vocal leader is probably the next step for me. Just cutting down on small things like turnovers, defensive mental errors and things like that. It’s not all about scoring. But I think being a more efficient player is something that I could work on, and that I worked on in the off-season, I could help the team win this year.

Q. You’ve obviously thought about it. How do you define leadership? What is your interpretation?

TORIN DORN: Leadership takes various forms. You can lead by actions, you can lead by being vocal. But leadership is doing the right things and being able to understand how to best motivate other people, you know, everybody’s not motivated in the same way, you have to know how to motivate them and get a group of guys to come together and work together for a common goal.

Q. All right, Torin, your turn?

TORIN DORN: Oh, man. I feel like they know everything at this point. But favorite color is also orange. Favorite rapper is Drake. I can say the 50 states in alphabetical order.

KEVIN KEATTS: We don’t have time for that. You know if you say that, they’ll make you do it though.

TORIN DORN: We don’t have time for that though.

KEVIN KEATTS: But I found out today and yesterday that he does a great Coach Keatts impression, which is good. So go ahead, T.D., I want to hear the coach ‘s impression. These guys want to hear it.

TORIN DORN: You want the uncut, or the edited version (laughing)? No. He would be like, “I think we have a great team. I think if we come together we can do a lot of things this year. We’re really versatile.” (Laughing). When he gets on, he’ll go, “T.D., if you let your man catch the ball one more time you’re coming out of the game, T.D., I promise you. I promise you you’re coming out of the game, if you let your man catch the ball one more time (laughing).”

KEVIN KEATTS: Paul, do I sound like that (laughing)? (ACC)

NC State is Adding UMASS’ Brett Nelson as an Assistant Coach

Published

on

According to reports, NC State is adding UMASS’ Brett Nelson as an Assistant Coach.

Nelson was only at UMASS for 1 season under Frank Martin. Prior to that, Nelson was the Head Coach at Holy Cross for 4 seasons, posting a 27-84 record.

Prior to taking the Head Coaching mantle at Holy Cross, Nelson was at Marquette for 5 seasons, spending the first 3 as an Assistant Coach, and the final two as an Associate Head Coach. Prior to Marquette, Nelson also served as an Assistant Coach at Ball St., Drake, Arkansas and Marshall.

Before coaching basketball, Nelson played for the University of Florida from 1999-2003. He was All-SEC twice, and earned Third Team All-American honors. When he left Gainesville, he was the Gators’ all-time leader in three pointers made, and ranked 2nd in steals.

Last Friday, Ross committed to UTSA after entering the Transfer Portal on April 17th, but it looks like he had a change of heart over the past couple of days.

NC State has been in desperate need to add a Big out of the Portal. They have hosted ECU’s Ezra Ausar and Georgia’s Frank Anselem-Ibe, but neither of them have found a home yet. With the addition of Ross, NC State has added depth in the Frontcourt, and unless something changes, their roster is full with 13 scholarship players.

Ross played in 14 games this past season, averaging 3.4 minutes per contest. After playing in 34 games last season, averaging 11.4 minutes per contest, Ross saw his participation dip to a career low this season, but that didn’t for a second break his infectious personality. On the sideline, you could count on Ross every single game to be the heart and soul of the Wolfpack on the bench. To watch a player who played as little as he did, care as much as he did, makes me super proud that this young man represented NC State so well.

Ross was a consensus 4-star player in NC State’s 2021 recruiting class, with 247Sports ranking him as the #60 overall player nationally. ESPN ranked him as the #5 overall player in the state of Florida.
