Published

on

RALEIGH – The second-ranked NC State baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on Saturday to No. 12 Louisville at Doak Field. The Wolfpack dropped game one, 14-10, and fell, 14-2, in game two.

The teams played a doubleheader due to heavy rain in the area on Friday evening, as the Wolfpack couldn’t overcome an early 9-2 deficit in game one and was unable to get around the hot Louisville bats in the nightcap.

NC State falls to 29-7 (12-5 ACC) while the Cardinals improve to 27-8 (12-5 ACC) on the year.

Quick Hits (Game One)
-The Cards quickly took a 1-0 advantage in the first. A one-out double and single put runners at the corners, and Logan Wyatt’s groundout to third knocked in the run.
-The Pack countered with a run of its own to knot the game in the bottom frame. Evan Edwards’ RBI double off the right center wall scored Jonny Butler after he led off with a single through the left side.
-The Cards re-gained its lead in the second on a bases-loaded error.
-In the third, Louisville took a 9-1 lead, as a three-run homer to right by Alex Binelas followed by Tyler Fitzgerald’s 2-RBI single up the middle and Wyatt’s 2-RBI double to right field plated the seven runs.
Will Wilson hit a leadoff homer to left, his team-tying 10th of the year, to get one back in the home half of the third.
-In the fifth, Wilson and Bailey launched back-to-back solo shots over the left field wall on two outs to cut the Pack’s deficit to 9-4.
-Louisville extended its lead to 12-4 in the sixth with three runs on four hits and a pair of Wolfpack errors.
-NC State tacked on a run in the sixth when Jonny Butler drove pinch runner Terrell Tatum home on a single up the middle. Luca Tresh led off the side with a single to the second baseman, and Tatum moved into scoring position on a passed ball after he entered the game.
-The Wolfpack had a four-run burst on three hits in the seventh to pull back within three of the Cards. The inning was started by Tyler McDonough’s two-RBI single after Bailey and Edwards walked to start the side. Pinch hitter Marek Chlup’s RBI triple to center and David Vazquez’s sac fly to left scored the other two runs of the frame.
-A two-run double by Binelas in the eighth extended Louisville’s lead to 14-9.
-Once again, NC State continued to cut down its deficit in the eighth, as Chlup’s sac fly to deep left field plated Edwards after he led off with a triple to center.
-Both teams went in order in the ninth, and the score held to give the Cards the first game of the series.

Inside The Box Score (Game One)
-Butler (2-for-5), Wilson (2-for-4) and Edwards (2-for-3) all turned in multi-hit performances, while Wilson, McDonough and Chlup all drove in two runs apiece.
-Bailey and Edwards extended their reached base streak to 35, and Edwards extended his hit streak to 16.
-Starter Jason Parker (3-2) was charged with the loss after going five complete.

Quick Hits (Game Two)
-The Cards opened the scoring in the third with a pair of runs on Zeke Pinkham’s triple to left center and Jake Snider’s single to right field.
-Louisville plated seven runs on eight hits in the fourth to extend its lead to nine.
-UL scored another three runs in the sixth via a solo shot and RBI double to right, as well as an RBI groundout to second.
-The Pack avoided the shutout with Tresh’s two-run blast to left field in the sixth after McDonough reached via a one-out single through the left side.
-The Cards tacked on its final two runs in the seventh on Fitzgerald’s sac fly to center field and Wyatt’s RBI groundout to third base.

Inside The Box Score (Game Two)
-The team tallied seven hits in the contest, led by McDonough’s 3-for-4 performance.
-Started Reid Johnston (5-1) was credited with the loss after going 3.1 innings.

NC State Baseball Bracketology Report Heading Into Series Against FSU

Published

on

#20 NC State will head down to Tallahassee tomorrow for a 3-game series against #7 FSU. Before they do, here’s a look at where NC State is projected to land in the 2024 NCAA Tournament as things currently stand.

Last week, both D1Baseball and Baseball America projected the Wolfpack to play as a #2 seed in the Greenville Regional (ECU), with the former projecting the Pirates to be a #6 seed, and the latter projecting them to be a #8 seed.

This week, D1Baseball has NC State as a #2 seed in the Lexington Regional, with Kentucky as a #5 seed. Baseball America still has the Wolfpack as a #2 seed in the Greenville Region, with the Pirates still sitting as a #8 seed.

#20 NC State Loses 4-5 to UNCW, Losing 5th Straight Midweek Game

Published

on

#20 NC State lost to UNC-Wilmington 4-5 this evening at home, losing their 5th straight midweek game. The Wolfpack were swept by the Seahawks this year, ironically losing 4-5 down in Wilmington on April 9th.

Freshman Ryan Marohn got the starting nod, and he was excellent, giving up 1 earned run in 5 innings pitched, striking out 7. It was arguably his best start since his collegiate debut against VCU in the opening series.

Sophomore Shane Van Dam was Mr. Reliable through much of the season, but he hasn’t had his best stuff as of late. This evening, he faced four batters, hitting 2, walking another, and surrendering a hit to the other. Van Dam failed to record an out, and gave up 3 earned runs. Heading into the UNC game back on April 18th, Van Dam had a 2.63 ERA. After the past 4 appearances, his ERA has shot up to 3.96.

Freshman Jacob Dudan settled things down, pitching 4 scoreless innings, giving up only 1 hit, while striking out 5.

Unfortunately, Sophomore Derrick Smith allowed the Seahawks to score a run in the Top of the 10th, which was enough for the opposing team to leave Raleigh with a win, with NC State failing to score a run in the final 5 frames.

Junior Jacob Cozart continues an insane power surge, hitting two more Home Runs tonight. Cozart has hit 7 Home Runs in the past 6 games.

Cozart now has 14 Home Runs on the year. His previous career high was 11.

Senior 1st Baseman Garrett Pennington also hit a Solo Home Run, his 11th bomb of the year.

On Friday, the Wolfpack will head down to Tallahassee for a 3-game series against #7 Florida State.

NC State Outfielder Josh Hogue Out for Remainder of the Season

Published

on

NC State will be without Sophomore Right Fielder Josh Hogue for the remainder of the season. Hogue unfortunately suffered a fractured leg due to a collision with Center Fielder Eli Serrano III on Saturday, with both players diving for a ball in the outfield.

Hogue will have to undergo surgery, and he is expected to be out 4 months.

This is a huge loss for the Wolfpack. Hogue has been batting 3rd in NC State’s lineup, with the 3rd best batting average on the squad (.314) and 4th best OPS (.848).

On Sunday, Freshman 2nd Baseman Luke Nixon moved out to Right Field to fill the void, and his brother Chase Nixon was in Right. Starter Senior Noah Soles has been out since the Notre Dame Series at the end of March, but he has been taking batting practice and should be returning soon.
