#13 NC State Falls at Notre Dame 5-4 in 1st Game of the Series

Published

on

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The series opener between No. 13 NC State baseball and Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium in South Bend, Ind., was a back-and-forth contest with five lead changes and two ties, but the Wolfpack ultimately came up short, 5-4, to the Fighting Irish.

The Pack falls to 32-11 overall and 13-9 in ACC play, while the Irish improve 18-22 in the year and 11-11 against conference opponents.

Quick Hits

-Evan Edwards put the Pack on the board first in the second inning. He led off with a single up the left field line and took second as the Irish left fielder was unable to field the ball cleanly. A pair of groundouts by Luca Tresh and David Vazquez allowed him to cross home plate.

-The Irish responded with a pair of runs in the bottom frame on David LaManna’s bases-loaded single to center field and Spencer Myers’ bases-loaded walk.

-In the fourth inning, Tresh launched a one-out solo shot over the right field wall to knot the score at two. It was his sixth of the year and second-straight game leaving the park.

-Notre Dame once again countered in the bottom half of the fourth with Jared Miller’s solo shot to right field, regaining its one-run advantage.

-After Dillon Cooper drew a one-out walk, Jonny Butler clubbed his second homer of the year to right center in the fifth inning, providing the go-ahead run for the Pack.

-In the seventh, three straight hits to start the side led to the Irish taking their lead back. A blooper to center field and bunt single put two on with no outs, and Jack Zyska’s two-run double off the left field wall drove the runs in.

-In the final two innings, the Notre Dame defense managed to hold onto its lead and allow just one Wolfpack runner to reach base.

Inside The Box Score

-Butler went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Edwards went 2-for-4. Tyler McDonough, Tresh and Vazquez also tallied a hit to contribute to the team’s seven in the game.

-McDonough extended his reached base streak to 12 games.

-Reliever David Harrison (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season on the mound. He allowed two earned runs on four hits and fanned three in 3.1 innings of work.

Published

on

#17 NC State’s late game heroics continued this afternoon, defeating #8 Wake Forest 9-6 in dramatic fashion late in the game for the 3rd straight game, completing the sweep of the Demon Deacons.

With the game tied 6-6, the Wolfpack scored 3 runs in the Bottom of the 8th inning, that would end up being the winning runs. With 2 outs, Freshman Alex Sosa scored on a throwing error, and Senior 1st Baseman Garrett Pennington followed that up with a 2 RBI Double.

Senior Starting Pitcher Logan Whitaker gave up 5 runs (1 unearned) in 4 innings pitched, striking out 5, while walking none. Freshman Ryan Marohn was fabulous in relief, giving up only 1 earned run in 4 innings pitched, striking out 4. Marohn has been extremely dependable as a True Freshman. After picking up the Win today, he boasts a 4-2 record with a 3.60 ERA.

Sophomore Derrick Smith came in to close things out in the Bottom of the 9th, and in electric fashion, he struck out all three batters to pick up his 5th Save of the season.

Sosa had himself a day, putting the Pack on the board in the Bottom of the 2nd with an RBI Single, which was followed up by a Solo Home Run in the Bottom of the 6th inning.

Pennington and Junior Catcher Jacob Cozart both had 3 RBI’s this afternoon. Pennington not only hit his 2 RBI Double in the Bottom of the 8th, but he also hit an RBI Single in the Bottom of the 5th. Cozart hit a 3-run bomb in the bottom of the 6th.

Sophomore Center Fielder Eli Serrano III and Senior 3rd Baseman Alec Makerewicz also had multi-hit performances. Serrano III was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a Run, while A-Mak was 2 for 1 with a Run.
