NC State Football Recruiting Update – September 12, 2019

Recent Commitment: 3* LB Devon Betty committed to State while on his official visit for the Western Carolina game. Betty is being recruited to play the new BUC (outside linebacker) position in the new 3-3-5 defensive scheme. Betty was injured during part of his junior season, which cut into some of his production, and probably limited him from explosive recruitment, but he still has a very, very high ceiling. Betty moved from Miramar HS to St. Thomas Aquinas after last season, and being around more marquee talent and better coaching will help him to arrive in Raleigh in great shape. Betty officially runs a 4.8 40 as measured at the Opening Combine in the Spring, but I think by the time he hits the field with us he will more like a 4.65 guy (especially if he can redshirt and get with Thunder Dan for a season).

Highlights of Betty:

Recent Decommit: Target 3* LB Jayland Parker has de-committed from Colorado. This was suspected for quite a while. He has tentatively booked an official visit to Raleigh for the Ball State game on 9/21. Parker is rated as high as the #23 inside linebacker in the country on 24/7 sports. Parker has been measured at 6’2″, 195 with a 4.69 40.  At this point, I would think that Parker is definitely a take for State.

Highlights of Parker:

Commitment Statistics Report from Week 3:

WR Porter Rooks – 3 catches for 152 yards and 3 Touchdowns in a 63-3 win. Rooks only played in the first half.

WR Stephen Gosnell – 3 Touchdowns (2 Catching, 1 Rushing)  in a 65-0 win.  4 catches for 104 yards.  East Surry won 65-0. East Surry is now 3-0 this season.

QB Ben Finley – 17 of 22 with 180 yards and 2 Touchdowns, 3 carries for 21 yards in a 28-26 victory. Finley left the game with an injury.

ATH Devan Boykin – Lost to Northern Guilford 24-14. Boykin had a 41 yard reception for a Touchdown in the 4th quarter. Boykin had 2 catches for 49 yards, two punts for 50 yards, 4 tackles and 1 Tackle for Loss

TE Ezemdi Udoh – 2 catches for 17 yards in a 21-10 loss to Jack Britt HS.

CB Aydan White – Christ School won 47-0. No Stats for him for the second game, but he did have four Touchdowns in their first game of the season.

DT Jaylen Smith – 2 tackles in a 50-33 loss to Rocky Mount HS.

S Nehki Meredith – No stats available but Bishop Sullivan won 31-16 over Woodberry Forest.

OG Sean Hill – 6 knockdown blocks in a 35-21 loss. Hill graded out at a 88% in the game.

OC Ethan Lane – 46-10 win. No stats available.

OT Patrick Matan – 35-21 win at Don Bosco Prep. Gonzaga HS is rated the #10 program in the country on Maxpreps.com

DT Pheldarius Payne – 2 tackles including 1 Tackle for Loss in a 55-0 win over Wagner College

DT Davin Vann – 10 tackles, 3 solo tackles, 2 sacks, one forced fumble in a 31-28 win.

OT Jonathan Adorno – 49-7 win at East Wake HS

LB Devon Betty – Bye last week, but 5 tackles in the first game of the season

OT Austin Blaske – Bye last week, but has 17 knockdowns and 3 tackles in 2 games

** Quite a few recruits had their Friday night games cancelled due to bad weather (Hurricane Florian).

Keep An Eye On…

3* DB Joshua Pierre Louis – A smaller frame DB who can absolutely fly in the open field. He reminds me a lot of Rashard Smith with his playmaking abilities. Rumor has it that he is going to try to officially visit State in the next few weeks. I think when we get him on campus, he will commit.

3* OL Anthony Carter – I think we will take one more offensive lineman in this class. It is no secret that Carter really likes State. He comes from a talent rich area and has future Offensive Tackle written all over him with his frame. I think we will also try to get him at State for an official visit soon.

3* LB Jayland Parker – I think we have a great chance of landing him.

ON3 ranks Pavey as the #4 player in the state of Kentucky (Robert A. Taft High/Burlington, KY)

NC State has already made quite the impression. They only offered him on April 24th. Getting an Official Visit scheduled a week after offering a player is a good sign.

When Pavey released his Top-8 back in February, NC State was obviously on the list. It consisted of Miami (OH), Toledo, Boston College, West Virginia, Pitt, Cincinnati, Indiana and Purdue. Wisconsin is also new to the scene, offering Pavey on April 21st.

As a Junior, Pavey had 46 tackles 7.5 sacks and 9 tackles for loss.

It’s not shocking that Young included the Wolfpack, because back on April 15th he shared that he had locked in an Official Visit to NC State for June 19-21. He also has Official Visits scheduled to Clemson (May 31), FSU (June 14), and Tennessee (June 21).

All 4 recruiting databases rank Young as a Top-200 prospect nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, with ESPN, 247Sports and ON3 ranking him in the Top-35. 247Sports ranks him as the #29 overall player nationally, the #2 Safety and the #2 player in the state of North Carolina.

This past season, Young had 66 tackles, 4 forced fumbles, 5 fumble recoveries, 1 interception and 3 pass breakups for Monroe High School. On the offensive side of the ball, he had 34 receptions for 812 yards and 8 touchdowns.

4-Star Safety Jontae Gilbert Has Locked in an Official Visit to NC State

Published

on

4-Star 2025 Safety Jontae Gilbert (6’1″/180) confirmed with me that he has locked in an Official Visit to NC State for the weekend of September 27-29, and he plans for it to be his last Official Visit.

Back in July of 2022, Gilbert committed to Ohio St., but last July he decommitted from the Buckeyes.

Gilbert also has Official Visits scheduled for UCF, South Carolina and USC.

At one point, Gilbert was a 5-star prospect, but now he is a consensus 4-star prospect, and a consensus Top-275 player. Rivals ranks him as the #70 overall player nationally in the 2025 recruiting class, and the #8 player in the state of Georgia.

NC State offered Gilbert in April of last year.

Recently, he has taken unofficial visits to, or been visited by Louisville, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia St., Oregon, Clemson, Texas and South Carolina.

While he doesn’t have an Official Visit set up with Georgia, the Bulldogs are obviously a big player in Gilbert’s recruitment.

Gilbert plays for Douglass High School in Atlanta, Georgia.
