PI EXCLUSIVE: NC State TE Transfer Commit Justin Joly Breaks Down His Commitment to NC State

Published

on

NC State will have a new offensive weapon in 2024 in Justin Joly, who is a Tight End Transfer from UCONN. ON3 ranks Joly as the #1 Tight End in the Transfer Portal. Joly verbally committed to run with the Wolfpack yesterday afternoon.

I caught up with Joly, and he broke down his decision to commit to NC State.

Why did you shut down your recruitment, and commit to NC State?

I shut down my recruitment because of how consistent the recruiting staff and the coaches were. They had faith in my game and what I can do for the team, and were constantly contacting me, which I took a high notice of. After having a talk with my family, we felt this was somewhere I can further my development on-and-off the field.

What was it about NC State that made you want to commit?

The feeling I had when I was first on campus, and how they showed me love, and how every single coach I met wanted me here. They showed dedication and they showed compassion towards me.

How does Robert Anae plan on using your unique athletic ability and skill set in his offense?

Coach Anae showed me what he has done with his other Tight Ends at Virginia and Syracuse, what role I would play in his offense, and how he would want me to execute certain plays in his offense. He had a 63 slideshow of plays that he had run with the flexed Y position, and I believe that is something I can get with for sure.

How much did Grayson McCall committing help you make your decision?

We have been talking since Sunday, since the end of my visit. I told him to let me know what he thinks, and we talked for sure. I was just waiting on his word, but it was great to see it, because we added a talented Quarterback to the roster, who’s gonna have great control of the team.

What do you think of NC State’s momentum in the Transfer Portal?

I’m pretty sure NC State’s got some more surprises coming through the Portal, but that’s not really for me to say, but if they want you, they will let it be known they want you.

How would you describe your game? Who is another player that your game resembles?

I would like to think I play gritty, with a lil bit of swag to my game. I’m not the flashiest player on the field, but I’ll get the job done. I also just don’t know how to celebrate, which I think is pretty funny. I just smile because I’m happy. I think my game can resemble an Sam Laporta and Evan Engram’s style of play.

CBS Sports Ranks Dave Doeren as 1 of the Top-20 Coaches in College Football

Published

on

CBS Sports released their Top-25 Power 4 Coaches in College Football, and NC State’s Dave Doeren came in at #16. Heading into last season, he went into the season ranked #25.

16) Dave Doeren: The NC State coach finally gets some overdue credit. He’s always hovered around the bottom of our top 25 or just outside it, and now he finds himself firmly entrenched in it thanks to all the changes at the top. Coaches who take mid-tier programs and overachieve never get enough credit, in my estimation, and the consistency Doeren has established at NC State — where he spent most of his time in a division with Clemson and Florida State — is one of the most impressive things any coach in the country has done. I’m glad to see Doeren getting closer to the top 15. 2023 rank: 25 (+9) (CBS Sports)

Numerous CBS Sports’ analysts voted in the poll, and Tom Fornelli actually ranked Doeren #8.

ACC Coaches that made the Top-25

3. Dabo Swinney (Clemson)

8. Mike Norvell (FSU)

16. Dave Doeren (NC State)

19. Jeff Brohm (Louisville)

NC State and UVA Agree to Home-and-Home Non-Conference Games

Published

on

NC State announced this morning that the Wolfpack and UVA will play in a home-and-home non-conference series, with the game in 2025 being in Raleigh, and the game in 2026 being in Charlottesville.

To reiterate, despite the fact that both teams are in the ACC, these games are considered non-conference games, and won’t count toward conference records. This is similar to what UNC and Wake Forest did a few years back.

Here’s what’s interesting about the addition of these games in 2025 and 2026. Prior to the announcement, NC State already had 4 non-conference games scheduled for both years.

It would be my assumption that one of the previously scheduled non-conference games for each season will not take place now.
