Where Are They Now? Jeremy Hyatt

In 1993 NC State picked up a 6’6 shooting guard, Jeremy Hyatt, out of Jacksonville, Florida. Known for his defense and his perimeter shooting Hyatt quickly became a fan favorite and was also a big part of the program from 1993-1997. Hyatt was a 3 years starter for the Wolfpack and was a member of Herb Sendek’s first NC State team. Hyatt was solid during his senior season, by averaging 10 points per game, 4 assists, 3 rebounds, and over a steal per game, all while shooting an outstanding 47% from the floor and 38% from 3 point range.

Hyatt, alongside Justin Gainey, Damon Thornton and CC Harrison were able to bring NC State to their first postseason since Jimmy Valvano led State there during the ’88-’89 season. The Wolfpack made a deep run in the ACC tournament and were selected for the NIT, where they were knocked out in the second round.

After college basketball Jeremy Hyatt went on what essesntially was a world tour, playing in France, Lebenon, and Central America amongst other places.

“It was a great experience for me, and I encourage anyone who can do it to do it. I got to see so many thing and get a broader view of this world.” said Hyatt of the places basketball has taken him.

When asked about the hardest adjustments of playing overseas, Jeremy was quick to talk about the language barrier.

“It’s funny, you know. They try to speak English and you try to speak their language but a lot gets lost in translation. But, at the end of the day we’re all the same. Everyone is the same. They countdown and hit (imaginitive) buzzer beaters in their driveway just like we do, but instead of 3…2….1… it’s trois…deux…un…..”

For nine seasons Jeremy played overseas, livingh is dream of playing professional basketball. Today, however, Jeremy is back in Raleigh, and still in a way, living his dream. Jeremy and fellow former Wolfpacker Mark L. Davis have started up a local basketball skills camp called “DRIVE Athletics.” DRIVE was founded in 2009 and aims to provide the most exciting, educational, and fulfilling experience through its basketball training and events. Their primary goal is to ensure the youth involved in their programs have an enjoyable experience while learning the game of basketball and showcasing their achievements and talents.

“We started DRIVE last year and it’s been going really go so far. We’re based out of Raleigh and we hold most of our clinics locally at Grand Slam USA off of Western, near NC State.” said Hyatt. “We do clinics for guards and some for big men, shooting clinics as well as ball handling clinics.”

With Drive Athletics constantly growing and expanding it seems as if Jeremy Hyatt is still doing what he loves.
