Russell Wilson Taken in the Rule 5 Draft by the Texas Rangers

Former Wolfpack QB and 2nd baseman Russell Wilson is the star of the Seattle Seahawks and has said he does not intend to become a 2 sport athlete. That didn’t stop the Rangers, who took Wilson in the Rule 5 draft today.

The move is costing the Rangers $12k, but it’s probably not a bad investment. It’s good publicity and if Wilson ever has concussion problems or can’t continue playing football for some reason, he’d very likely switch to baseball. If that were to happen the Rangers would have him locked up.

The Rangers are spinning it as “We just want to have him around and be part of our organization.” which is good for both parties. Wilson has expressed interest in coming to spring training and working out with the team, but he’s not going to jeopardize what he’s currently building in the NFL.

Good for Wilson, good for the Rangers, good for NC State, bad for Tom O’Brien.
