Rivers Contract Solution In The Works

Training camp has kicked off across the NFL and this past off-season has been one full of rumors regarding Philip Rivers. It was widely reported that he wanted to be traded before the draft and he was not interested in signing a long term extension given the unknown future of the Chargers. However, that stance has softened on Rivers side. He explained that he was committed to the Chargers, but did not want to distract the team with ongoing talks about his contract situation.

Throughout the spring and this training camp Rivers has been as attentive as ever. He scheduled his usual throwing sessions with his wide-outs during the spring and has worked with new comer Steve Johnson as well as Melvin Gordon (1st round pick).

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Tribune reported that Rivers and the Chargers have set a deadline of the first preseason game, August 13th, to have a new contract signed.  If not, they will revisit once the season concludes in 2016. It is important to note that the Chargers also have the leverage of placing the franchise tag on Rivers, which would keep him with the bolts in 2016. There is no doubt that Rivers is one of the premiere quarterbacks in the NFL.  Check out these highlights from a season ago.
