UNC Reports New Violations; Ruling Delayed

Next Tuesday, August 18th, UNC was supposed to respond to the NCAA’s Notice of Allegations, but Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham announced yesterday that the University had reported two more pieces of information potentially requiring further review.

The two pieces of information involve inappropriate academic assistance provided to several former Women’s Basketball players, and potential recruiting violations in Men’s Soccer over the past two years.

UNC now has 60 days to review the new findings. If the NCAA determines them to be Level I or Level II infractions, the notice of allegations would need to be amended and resubmitted. At that point, UNC’s 90 day response time would start over.

Initially the thought was that this would all be wrapped up by February, but with this new wrinkle, it looks like a conclusion is more likely to come in April or May.

The final ruling of the NCAA will now fall after National Signing Day and the NCAA tournament. In a nutshell, due to UNC’s self reporting, it is unlikely that any Tar Heel athletic program will be impacted by any ruling during 2015-16.
