History of NC State vs. Louisville

NC State and Louisville have faced each other a grand total of five times, the first matchup coming in 1951 as the Wolfpack lost by the score of 26-2.  The two teams met once again in 1993, but again NC State lost at Louisville 35-14.  The lone meeting in Carter-Finley came in 2007, but NC State still could not find a W as the Cards beat the Pack 29-10.  NC State finally picked up a win versus the Cards in 2011 as the two schools played in the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina.  NC State capped a strong season in 2011 winning 31-24.  Last season was the first matchup as conference foes, and even though NC State lost the game, Coach Doeren has talked about how the game was a turning point in the season.  The Pack battled back to bring it within a one possession game in the final 3 minutes, giving them confidence to finish the season strongly.

NC State vs. Louisville: Cards lead series 4-1

  • 1951 Cards defeat Pack 26-2
  • 1993 Cards defeat Pack 35-14
  • 2007 Cards defeat Pack 29-10
  • 2011 Pack defeat Cards 31-24
  • 2014 Cards defeat Pack 30-18

Last time State won:

Mike Glennon was the Wolfpack signal caller and he faced Teddy Bridgewater.  Both QB’s have since started in the NFL.  The Wolfpack played a great game defensively, forcing 3 interceptions.  David Amerson was outstanding, snagging two interceptions and a touchdown for good measure.

Offensively Mike Glennon was steady, completing 21 of 33 for 246 yards and 3 touchdowns.  His number one target on the night was speedy TJ Graham who hauled in 7 balls for 116 yards and two scores.  The Cards Teddy Bridgewater had a rough night, throwing three interceptions, and he only competed 55% of his passes.  All in all it was a great win for the Pack.

Last time they played 2014:

The Wolfpack scored on a 21-yard strike from Jacoby Brissett to David Grinnage to pull within 5 with 2:21 remaining.  The whole game Michael Dyer got whatever he wanted and sealed the game for the Cards when he broke lose and scored on a 46-yard run with 44 seconds left in the contest.  Brissett was instrumental in bringing the Wolfpack back, throwing for 2 touchdowns and rushing for 40 yards; however, it wasn’t enough.

The turning point in the game came when the Cardinals QB fumbled the ball late in the third quarter and was returned by NC State Linebacker Airius Moore 72 yards for a touchdown, but replay overturned the play. If the play stood, NC State would have been in the lead 17-15.

The deficit was too much to over come, as State could not slow Dyer down in the fourth quarter and failed to recover an on-side kick.

Looking ahead:

NC State will look to win their first ACC game of the season when the Cards travel to Raleigh for Saturday’s game.  The weather could be a factor as rain showers are in the forecast.  If it is a sloppy game it should favor the ground heavy Pack.  Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 at Carter Finley.  If you can’t make it to the game you can catch all the action on the ACC Network.
