NC State Defense Among Nations Best

Published

on

After another somewhat stingy effort against Louisville, NC State’s defense continues to be ranked around the Top-10 in the FBS in a number of categories.

Getting Off The Field

NC State is 10th in the nation in third down conversion defense, allowing opposing offenses to convert only 25% of the time.  The Pack has also not allowed a 4th down conversion on the season, leaving them tied for 1st in the nation.  Also, they have only yielded 62 total first downs this season, which is good for 7th in the nation.

You Shall Not Pass

Although some big plays have been given up this year, the secondary has done a great job so far.  They rank 9th in passing yards allowed at 145.6 yd/game, and are 17th in the nation in passing efficiency defense.

…And You Can’t Run Either

As good as the Pack has been through the air, they have been equally impressive at limiting the run.  Through 5 weeks they rank 6th in rushing defense, giving up only 80.2 yds/game.

Putting it All Together

NC State is quietly having the best defensive year it has had in a long time.  By being consistent and versatile they have managed to only give up 13.6 points per game, which is 11th best in the nation. Furthermore they are only giving up 225.8 yd/game, which ranks 3rd in the nation.

If States defense can keep rolling, and the offense bounces back from a poor performance against Louisville, then this could turn in to a special season.
