The History of NC State vs. Virginia Tech

NC State and Virginia Tech will kickoff up in Blacksburg tonight at 8pm on ESPN.  Here is a brief look at the history of the series between the Wolfpack and the Hokies.

• The history of the NC State vs. Virginia Tech series dates all the way back to 1900, when the Hokies came down to Raleigh and defeated NC State 18-2 on October 25th.
• The two teams have faced each other 48 times, and NC State’s record against the Hokies is 18-26-4.
• NC State has played Virginia Tech 4 times since they became members of the ACC back in 2004, and the Hokies have won 3 of the 4 games.
• While 36 of the games between these two happened in the state of Virginia, only 14 of them have taken place in Blacksburg, and the Wolfpack’s record there is 3-9-2.
• Frank Beamer became the head coach of Virginia Tech back in 1987, and the Wolfpack have beaten him only twice in eight chances, with one of those coming in Blacksburg in 2004.

Last Time They Met

Virginia Tech came down to Carter-Finley back on October 2, 2010, and the Hokies went home with a 41-30 victory in their pocket.  NC State lit up the Virginia Tech defense to the tune of 507 yards of total offense, but they couldn’t overcome their 3 turnovers.  Wolfpack Quarterback Russell Wilson passed for 362 yards and three touchdowns, but he also completed only 43% of his passes and threw three interceptions.  Hokie Quarterback Tyrod Taylor passed for three touchdowns, and also rushed for 121 yards.  Darren Evans also ran for 160 yards and 2 touchdowns.

NC State Running Back Mustafa Greene ran for 91 yards, and they also had two 100-yard receivers in the contest (Jarvis Williams – 105/Owen Spencer – 145).  Wolfpack Linebacker Nate Irving had 13 tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 1 sack.

Last Time the Wolfpack Won 

On September 25, 2004, NC State travelled up to Blacksburg and defeated the Hokies in a defensive battle.  The two teams combined for a total of 415 yards of offense.  Wolfpack Quarterback Marcus Stone snuck the ball into the end zone in the third quarter, and it ended up being enough to hold off the Hokies.  Jay Davis was the starting Quarterback for NC State, and he threw for 64 yards and an interception.  T.A. McClendon rushed the ball 24 times for 93 yards and a touchdown.
