T.Y. McGill Solidifying His Spot

From undrafted to vying for a starting job. That’s the story of former NC State Defensive Tackle T.Y. McGill.

What a difference a year can make.

After graduating from NC State last Spring, McGill didn’t get an invite to the NFL Combine, and didn’t hear his name called during the 2015 NFL draft. McGill was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks, and while head coach Pete Carroll had great things to say about McGill, he was waived shortly thereafter.

On September 6th, the Colts signed McGill to a 3-year $1.575 million contract. Even with the contract, it was unknown if McGill would actually make the team, but make the team he did, and by the end of the season Colts nation knew his name.

On December 27th, McGill picked up two sacks against the Dolphins, with one of them going for a Safety. He finished the season with three sacks, with all three coming in the final two games of the season. Those three sacks tied for 2nd on the team.

McGill entered 2016 with his roster spot not solidified once again, but he has easily been the player that has flashed the most on the Colts defense during training camp, and preseason play. He has stood out so much, that he is no longer worrying about his roster spot. McGill is wondering if he might be starting.

On the current depth chart, McGill sits behind David Parry at Nose Tackle, but don’t be surprised to see McGill push Parry for his job. McGill also has shown that he has the athleticism to stretch out to Defensive End and be effective as well.

Forgive my cheese as I tip my hat to Drake, but McGill started from the bottom, and now he’s here.
