The Drive from SD to LA works for Philip Rivers

The Chargers officially moved from San Diego to Los Angeles, but their quarterback did not. Former NC State Quarterback Philip Rivers is the signal caller for the Los Angeles Chargers, but his home is still in North San Diego.

Rivers has chosen to commute up and down the I-5 corridor everyday because he believes this is the best decision for his family of 10.

“We just thought it was best for me and my family to go this route — that it was at least worth a try this first season, being that it wasn’t too far,” Rivers said. “There’s two things I didn’t want to compromise: I didn’t want to compromise my preparation/being a teammate. I love being a teammate, so I didn’t want to compromise that because I’m going back and forth. And I wasn’t going to compromise my time spent away from my family. (ESPN)

In normal traffic, it takes 90 minutes to trek the 70 mile distance. According to the article linked above, Rivers is planning on hiring a driver, so that he can turn the rest of the vehicle into a QB room with TV’s so he can watch game film.

I think traffic on Capital Blvd in Raleigh is hell on earth, but I’ve heard L.A. traffic can be worse.

I’m not quite sure how this plan guarantees more time with teammates and family, because it seems like it will be less of both, but what do I know. I have a hard time parenting two boys. Who am I to question a father of 8. Enjoy the road Philip!
