Jacoby Brissett’s Standing With Patriots Uncertain

Former NC State quarterback Jacoby Brissett’s standing with the Patriots is much more uncertain this year. Last year, Tom Brady was suspended for the first four games, and Brissett knew he could get thrown into the line of fire. Then, Jimmy Garoppolo goes down with an injury, and the rookie was thrown into the fire, playing in 3 games (starting in 2) for the team that would go on to win the Super Bowl.

This year Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo are back in the fold, and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick believes that Brissett is in a unique situation this season.

“I think he’s had a good training camp so far and it looks like he’s come back ready to compete and he’s definitely made some progress here in the last week or so. We will just see how that continues to go.” (247)

While this season probably won’t be as eventful as the last, Brissett has a lot to prove to the Patriots this season. Brady says that he wants to play until he has grey hair, but this could just as easily be his last year for the Pats. Jimmy Garoppolo becomes a free agent at the end of next season, and could be looking for a big pay day. If Brissett shows the Pats that he has the stuff to be a franchise QB that they can build their future around, they could let Garoppolo spread his wings and fly into free agency.

We will have to see how things pan out for the former Wolfpacker this season, but according to his coach, he’s off to a good start this preseason.

“I think he’s had a good training camp so far and it looks like he’s come back ready to compete and he’s definitely made some progress here in the last week or so. We will just see how that continues to go.” (247)
