Giglio on State: Doeren is still coaching for job

N&O’s Joe Giglio gives probably the most honest take on NC State sports in the local media. He’s a former grad who obviously is a Wolfpack fan, but one who doesn’t allow his bias to cloud the truth.

On ‘The Wake Up Call’ this morning, Giglio discusses NC State football. He starts by expressing his surprise in the variance of hype the Wolfpack is getting. They aren’t even a top 25 team, but some analysts are saying they could make it to the College Football Playoffs.

Giglio also goes on to say that he believes Dave Doeren might not even be the NC State coach right now if he hadn’t beaten UNC last season and that he still is coaching for his job this season.

Now, that type of take is interesting, but we believe it to be true, which seems crazy. On one hand you have a team that some project to be a top 10 team in the nation, meanwhile, the head coach is on thin ice.

How is it possible? Well, this too is interesting. Doeren has pretty much underachieved every season in Raleigh, but Wolfpack fans are 100% in for being patient while he builds the program with his guys.

Don’t get us wrong. We are on the side that believes Doeren should certainly get this season to prove himself (and we believe he will), but we also think that if they do not meet expectations, NC State should start having some serious internal discussions.

What do you think? Is Giglio being harsh on Doeren, or is this a make-or-break year for the Wolfpack’s lead man?
