Trea Turner Steals His 40th Base of the Season

Former NC State Shortstop Trea Turner, otherwise known as Trea ‘Burner’, stole his 40th base of the season last night in the Nationals 2-8 loss to the Braves.

This is the second highest total ever posted by a member of the Nationals. In 2006, Alfonso Soriano stole 41 bases, and Turner has 17 games left. Something tells me that Turner will hold the Nationals record by seasons end.

What makes Turner’s 40 stolen bases so impressive, is that he has pulled off the feat in only 83 games, missing 2 months of action with a broken wrist.

You could make a legitimate argument that Turner is the best base stealer in the Majors.

Turner is averaging a steal every 2.075 games. If you prorate that out for 162 games, you’re looking at 76 steals in a season, which has only been done 4 times since 1990.

Billy Hamilton, who currently leads the Majors with 58 stolen bases, steals a base on average every 2.276 games, which prorates out to around 71 stolen bases in 162 games.

Dee Gordon is second in the Majors with 52 steals, and swipes one on average every 2.692 games, which prorates out to around 60 stolen bases in 162 games.

Keep on running Trea ‘Burner.’
