Doeren up for “Bear” Bryant National Coach of the Year Award

What a difference a few weeks make. After the opening season loss to South Carolina, some NC State fans were lined up, pitchforks in hand, ready to pull the plug on the Dave Doeren era. Now, just 6 weeks (and 6 wins) later, Doeren is negotiating a contract extension and making ‘National Coach of the Year’ lists.

Doeren is one of 20 candidates for an award that describes itself like this:

Now in its 32nd year, the “Bear” Bryant award recognizes the country’s top college football coaches for their contributions both on and off the field. The Coach of the Year Award is the only college coaching honor selected after all bowl games are concluded and is voted on by the National Sports Media Association. Finalists will be announced in December.

So what do you think DD has to do to secure the award? Win the ACC? Get to the CFB playoffs? Probably both, but the fact that it’s in reach is enough to warrant the meteoric rise of Doeren’s stock.
