Face it, NC State’s offense > NC State’s defense

Coming into the 2017 season, all of the hype was about NC State’s defense, and how they would be one of the best units in the country. On the other side of the ball, there honestly wasn’t much talk about the Wolfpack Offense. Sure, everyone thought Jaylen Samuels would shine, and Ryan Finley was pretty good the year before. With that being said, there were questions about the running back position after the exodus of Matt Dayes, and the quality of depth behind Kelvin Harmon and Stephen Louis at the wide receiver position.

Seven games through the 2017 season, a majority of the talk still tends to be about NC State’s impressive defense, and I don’t get it. Don’t get me wrong, I know that the Wolfpack has one of the best defensive lines in the country, led by Bradley Chubb. They are the #1 rush defense in the ACC and the #6 nationally. I’ll give credit where credit is due, but let me shine a light on the rest of the NC State defense. They rank 121st nationally in pass defense, giving up 287 Yards through the air per game. When you add it all up, NC State ranks 54th in total defense.

Now, I want to shine a light on the NC State offense, which has outperformed the defense, even though they don’t get enough credit. They rank 46th in rush offense (177.4), 24th in pass offense (290), and 24th in total offense (467.4)

The Wolfpack boasts a Top 25 offense.

According to ESPN’s FPI Efficiency calculations, NC State has the 9th most efficient offense in the nation, and their defense is the 46th most efficient.

If NC State’s defense can catch up to their offense, the Wolfpack will be really hard to stop.
