If only Dennis Smith Jr. could stay healthy!

The former Wolfpack PG and #6 pick in last years NBA draft is back in street clothes after a ‘freak accident‘ let to a strained hip.

It was initially believed that Smith Jr would only miss two games, but it sounds like he wasn’t that fortunate. In fact, the reports that are coming out don’t sound all that great. Here is the report from the ClutchPoints.

Rick Carlisle says there’s no timetable for Dennis Smith Jr. (left hip strain) to return: “Him getting 100 percent healthy is our No. 1 priority.” Smith will meet with the team physician when the Mavs return home.

Meeting with the team physician when they return home seems to imply that things may not be as minor as they initially thought. A hip strain has many grades, if that is in fact what it is.  He could be looking at anywhere from 2 to 8 weeks if it’s more serious.

The rookie PG was coming off a stretch of good games that had his coach raving about his improvements. His 14.4 ppg is second on the team behind Harrison Barnes, and his 4 assists per game are second to only JJ Barea.

We’ll keep you updated once the Mavs release more information.
