Walk-on Spencer Newman will transfer from NC State

Spencer Newman came to NC State as a walk-on, but there were initial thoughts that he could help the team as a spot shooter and possibly work his way into earning a scholarship.

That never happened and today we learned that he was granted his release from NC State and will be transferring. Here is his message to Wolfpack nation.

Newman was actually a pretty heralded high school player out of Bayside Academy in Alabama. He led his school in scoring as a freshman  (14ppg), went for 21 per game as a sophomore, 20 as a junior and 22 as a senior. All that scoring helped him break his high school’s record for most career points with 2,232.

In his first year with the Wolfpack, Newman was forced to redshirt after an injury in practice that cost him the season. In year two, under new head coach Kevin Keatts, he only logged 6 minutes on the season and was unable to record a basket.

Here’s to Spencer lancing somewhere he can get more minutes and flash that scoring ability he showed in high school.

Here are some highlights from Newman’s HS career…

Will we even have any walk-ons next year? Seems like we’ve got 19 or 20 scholarship players lined up.

Happy for him. Hope he finds some place where he gets tons of minutes.
