NC State takes home an individual NCAA title, Sits in 4th after Day 3

MINNEAPOLIS- The NC State men’s swimming & diving team earned its first individual NCAA Championship since 2006 when Cullen Jones won the 50 freestyle as Coleman Stewart finished first in the 100 backstroke Friday night inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center. Heading into the final day the Pack sits fourth with 252 points.

100 Backstroke
Coleman Stewart won the NCAA Championship in the 100 back after going 44.58; his title was the Pack’s first male individual title since Cullen Jones’ 50 free championship in 2006 and the first individual championship won by head coach Braden Holloway. Stewart was joined on the podium by Andreas Vazaios who finished third in 44.81.

In prelims Vazaios finished second with a time of 45.00, Stewart took seventh in 45.16, Stuart finished 23rd in 46.20 and Noah Hensley posted a time of 46.28 to take 25th.

400 IM
Anton Ipsen set a new school record as he took third in the ‘B’ final, touching the wall at 3:39.71 seconds to be named Honorable Mention All-America.

Ipsen posted the 12th-fastest time in the prelim as broke the school record with a time of 3:39.90 seconds while Eric Knowles finished 35th in 3:46.79 seconds.

100 Butterfly
Ryan Held added another All-America Honor to his resume as he took fifth in the ‘A’ final with a time of 44.88. Coleman Stewart added Honorable Mention All-America Honors as he went 44.84 to win the ‘B’ final; a time that would have seen him take fifth in the ‘A’ final.

In the prelim Held took fourth in 45.06, Stewart finished 11th in 45.36 and James Bretscher finished 38th in 46.98.

3-Meter Diving
James Brady earned a top-20 finish as he posted a score of 364.30 to take 20th.

200 Medley Relay
The Pack earned All-America Honors as Andreas Vazaios, Daniel Graber, Jacob Molacek and Cobe Garcia took eighth in the ‘A’ final with a time of 1:24.88.

In the prelim Andreas Vazaios, Daniel Graber, Coleman Stewart & Jacob Molacek posted a time of 1:23.66 seconds in the 200 medley relay to finish seventh and advance to the A final

NC State will continue competition at the NCAA Championships in Minneapolis on Saturday, the final day of the meet. Action will resume inside the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center at 11 a.m. (ET) on Saturday as the team competes in the 1,650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, platform diving and 400 freestyle relay. Live results and live stream will be available for both sessions.
