RS Junior DE James Smith-Williams talks about being called a “freak” and why it caught him by surprise. He also hints that people may be selling NC State defensive line just a little short this coming season. Here’s what he had to say in BULLETED form.

  • Nice to be referred to as a freak (by ‘The Athletic’). Definitely, earn that label. Likes the reward for all the work.
  • Teammates excited, but can’t let head get big over it. That is weightlifting related, not football.
  • Was caught off guard by the article. Was busy just grinding all summer. Nice surprise.
  • Added 70lbs since high school. Tough road, but credit to the staff.
  • More muscle adds durability. Allows him to absorb blows.
  • Seeing whole D-line drafted has proven to just trust staff and they’ll get you there.
  • Going to be getting more snaps. Needs to start in practice, grind through the heat and get ready.
  • Keeps hearing time to step up. Came in first day of camp and said “Here it is”
  • Lost a lot of guys on the line, but the returners are all guys who can play and succeed at this level
  • People can say what they want. Label us the weak link if you want to. All that matters is Saturday Sept. 1st
