Earlier this week, NC State athletic director Debbie Yow was at WRAL’s Fan Town Hall with Duke Athletic Director Kevin White and UNC’s Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham. You can watch it below, and check out a bulleted breakdown of what she had to say underneath that.

  • She talked about the new NCAA rules pertaining to “elite” Men’s Basketball players being able to hire an approved agent, and even come back to school. The devil is in the details. What about the players that aren’t elite?
  • “Interested in selling beer and wine. There is a state law for public institutions. We don’t really have the authority to do that at the moment. We’ve read about other schools that have done it, and according to their reports, they have had less of an issue in the parking lot, and been a benefit in that way. They stay in the stadium. They have that opportunity. We’re interested in that.”
  • She said that it is important that when the NCAA punishes schools for infractions, they need to make sure to punish the guilty, and not the innocent. This is a matter of trust with the NCAA.
  • A couple of years ago our head coach and Duke’s head coach talked about the possibility of a football series. There were conflicts on the dates that were being discussed. She is a proponent of not having divisions, and doing a straight rotation, which would be equitable to everyone. It would allow the student athletes on every team to play every team in the conference at least once in 4 years. As it is, we play Duke twice in 12 years, and they’re thirty minutes away. It’s illogical and lacks good common sense. She has proposed this more than once at ACC AD meetings. Can’t muster the votes necessary.
  • Has arguably the best chancellor in the United States in Randy Woodson.
  • Too early for succession plans. Living in the moment. One year as an AD is like a dog year. We will talk about that in the middle of the Winter or the Spring.
  • Talks about a lot of the benefits that players receive as college athletes. Some people talk about how the players at the top of the pyramid are taken advantage of, but the pyramid is big, and a majority of the players aren’t a part of that discussion. For the students at the top of the pyramid, we are their marketing arm. We are helping them grow their brand in a way they couldn’t’ on their own.
