Yesterday NC State head coach Dave Doeren had his weekly press conference, and he broke down the positives and negatives from the James Madison game, talked about the “White Out” this weekend, and previewed Georgia State in his opening remarks. Here is a link to the video, and a BULLETED breakdown of what he had to say. We will breakdown his responses to the media’s questions later today.

Positives from James Madison

  • Turnover margin was a huge point of emphasis heading into game. They were +1.5 for the past 30 games, so to be even in that game was good.
  • 3rd down offense was exceptional. JR WR Jakobi Meyers had several of those plays.
  • Redzone defense: 80% effective keeping them from scoring touchdowns. Obviously you don’t want them to be down there. That would be even better.
  • End of half 2-minute touchdown was excellent.
  • SR RB Reggie Gallaspy played behind his pads. Ran hard. Did a nice job getting some tough yards, because the holes weren’t very big at times.
  • Good to see Freshman Trent Pennix and Ricky Person get in there and pick up blitzes, run hard, and take care of the football. They will grow.
  • Jakobi Meyers and RS FR Thayer Thomas were good playmakers on offense. With Nyheim Hines and Jay Sam gone we were looking to see who would step up.
  • WR’s SO Emeka Emezie and RS SO CJ Riley’s confidence level is night and day from where it was a year a go.
  • Was good to have 5 OL starters playing together. So many guys in and out of the lineup in training camp. A lot of stuff they have to do better playing next to each other.
  • Good to get a bunch of Freshman in the game.
    • Thought Nickel Tanner Ingle played really well. He gave up one touchdown, which was a good learning experience for him. They put the guy who normally lines up outside in the slot. Opportunity for him to learn what’s happening.
    • DT Alim McNeil got a pass breakup.
    • DE Ibrahim Kante got a sack.
    • TE Damien Darden got a lot of reps.
  • 4th quarter. Outscoring them 7-3 and not giving them the ball back, and stopping them on defense.

Negatives from James Madison

  • Rushing offense was less than 4 yards per carry. Unacceptable. Being addressed and talked about.
  • Defense not handling the scrambling of the quarterback on 3rd down.
  • 1st and 3rd quarter didn’t score points. Take pride in starting fast, the game and after half. Didn’t do that. Had good drives, but didn’t finish them.
  • 1st down offense, ties into run game, needs to improve. Help us have more manageable third downs. Didn’t hurt in this game, but will in the future.
  • 3 Penalties that shouldn’t have happened. 2 hits on the sideline. Offsides on the kickoff. Unacceptable.
  • Getting more points. Need to get in the 30+ range.
  • Had heat related health issues. Players hooked up to IV’s…cramping. Talked with our nutritionist, training staff and strength staff, and we thought did everything right. So we have to do some more things.

The White Out

  • Excited for the first White Out at Carter-Finley. Sure fans will enjoy wearing white in the heat. That’ my gift to you. Wearing white for a 12:30 kickoff on a hot day.
  • Players and recruits are excited about the “Ice Wolf” jersey’s. Think you’ll enjoy them.

Previewing Georgia State

  • New program. Have done a nice job.
  • Won their bowl game over Western Kentucky.
  • Won their opener against Kennesaw St. 24-20. Were down 14-0, and scored 2 touchdowns within a minute to close the half, and finished the game with a game-winning drive.
  • New QB (Dan Ellington) had a nice game. Good athlete. JUCO transfer. 3 passing touchdowns and was their leading rusher. Over 70% completion.
  • Leading receiver in college football: Penny Hart. Slot receiver…returner. Over 2,000 career receiving yards. Over 1,000 last year.
  • 4 starting linemen back.
  • Uptempo offense.
  • Different defensive front and scheme than last week. 3-down scheme. Whether they are in a 3-4, or moving into 4-down fronts.
  • Not a big blitz team, but a lot of different things coming at you.
  • Secondary is active.
  • Defensive End (Michael Shaw) who is the all-time tackle for loss leader in school history. 3rd in sacks. Need to know where he is.
  • +1 in turnover margin after one game.
  • Georgia State AD Charlie Cobb played football at NC State
