NC State monitoring Hurricane Florence. Will they move the game? Change the time?

With Hurricane Florence approaching North Carolina, and Raleigh right in its path, NC State is watching and waiting to decide on Saturday’s game.

From the looks of it, the game is likely to be played, however, the when and the where is still very much up in the air.

If Giglio is right (which he likely is), then there is a chance that NC State moves the game from Raleigh to Morgantown. But is that even fair? The guy who sent the tweet cites the Florida / LSU game from 2 years ago when Hurricane Matthew was barrelling toward the coast.

In that case, the game was just postponed and scheduling issues had it be moved at a later date. So it’s a bit different from this case. Moving the game to Morgantown would mean changing venue, getting tickets in order, getting the field ready and figuring out how a trade-off would work, all within a few days. Sure, it’s possible, but it would be a massive task.

As far as fairness, NC State would lose a home game against the #15 team in the nation, so some concessions would need to be made. Cook suggests that they would move next year’s game to Raleigh if this year’s gets moved.

Another option would be to push it back to later on Saturday. However, if you lived here during Hurricane Fran, the aftermath was devastating. Would they still have power at the stadium? Would they feel comfortable playing if their fans were dealing with massive damage and flooding? Would the field even be able to hold the type of rain we’re expecting? These are all things that NC State is having to consider.

Here is the email NC State sent out to all media and fans…

NC State Athletics is closely monitoring the forecast for Hurricane Florence related to potential impacts on upcoming home events, as well as away travel for its teams and student-athletes.

Specific to the NC State vs. West Virginia football game on Sat., Sept. 15, NC State Athletics is in regular communication with representatives of West Virginia Athletics, the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), meteorologists, and regional emergency management services. The Mountaineers ability to safely travel to Raleigh on Friday as planned will be one of a number of considerations this week.

Any changes to scheduled games and events will be posted on GoPack.com and shared with fans via email, social media, and other communications channels. The safety and wellbeing of fans, student-athletes and event staff is always paramount.
