WVU Head Coach Holgorsen Unwilling to Move Game vs. NC State

With Hurricane Florence approaching the state of North Carolina, the status of the NC State vs. #14 West Virginia football game continues to swirl in uncertainty.

Many ideas have been tossed around.

  • Swap, and play this year in West Virginia, and next year in Raleigh.
  • Move the time back.
  • Play the game on Sunday.
  • Play the game at a neutral site.

West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen says he isn’t willing to entertain any of those ideas. Either they will play the game at 3:30 on Saturday in Raleigh, or they won’t play it at all.

“The only bit of advice that I have given is that we’re not going to try to outsmart this system,” Holgorsen said. “I’m not going to move it to a different location, try to move it up or push it back. That disrupts so many people. It disrupts too many things. We have a plan to play 3:30 on Saturday. If we can’t, then we’re not going to play it.”

“It’s a high-profile game. No one wants to play it more than I do, I can assure you that,” Holgorsen said. “But there’s one next week and eight more after that. Hopefully we can play it. If not, life moves on.” (Link)

Some of this has to do with a bad experience of moving the kickoff time of a game when he was the offensive coordinator for Houston back in 2008 when Hurricane Ike came through, resulting in a loss to Air Force.

I’m all for player safety, and for not derailing the entire season to make 1 game work, but I believe there are creative options worthy of consideration that could make this game a reality.
