A quick glance at the somewhat strange history between NC State and Marshall

When NC State takes on Marshall this Saturday it will be their first away game of the season. It will also be the 5th meeting between the two teams. The most consistent theme in this series seems to be NC State needing some late-game heroics to put away the Thundering Herd.  Here is a brief history of the matchup.

  • Last year NC State defeated the Thundering Herd 37-20, and while the final score made it look like somewhat of a blowout, it was anything but. Marshall jumped out to a quick 13-3 lead and was up 20-10 at the half. That’s when NC State caught fire. The Pack scored 27 unanswered including 2 TD runs by Reggie Gallaspy and a 34 yard TD by Kelvin Harmon.
  • In 1991, State had another rough matchup with Marshall. They were down 14-3 with 3 minutes remaining. After driving down for a TD, the Pack got an onside kick. QB Geoff Bender led State down the field but missed on a 4th and long pass. It seemed like that was the end of the line, but a Marshall player had been flagged for offsides. NC State ended up converting on the next play and eventually went down and scored the game-winning TD and won 15-14.
  • In 1993, NC State once again needed a late surge to beat Marshall. This time it was QB Terry Harvey having to lead State on two scoring drives in the final 10 minutes to pull off a 24-17 win. The Wolfpack defense held Marshall scoreless in the 2nd half.
  • 1995 was the outlier. In this one State came out and controlled it from the opening kick. Terry Harvey hit the 4,000 career passing yards mark in this game and the Pack won 33-16.
