Published

on

With the 2018 Football season in the bag, we don’t have to speculate any longer about which true freshman redshirted this year under the new redshirt rules.

There were 24 members of the 2018 Wolfpack recruiting class, and 14 (13 freshman and 1 Junior (Joe Babros) of them officially redshirted the 2018 season according to the roster on GoPack.com.

Defensive Tackle Val Martin was a JUCO transfer in the 2018 class, and only played in 4 games (6 tackles), but wasn’t eligible to redshirt, because he redshirted the 2016 season at Iowa Western Community College.

3-Star Offensive Tackle Kahric Belle is no longer on the roster.

(The list below includes non-scholarship players that redshirted)

Under the new redshirt rules, you can play in 4 games, and still redshirt the season. Eight of the Freshman that were redshirted saw action this season, with three of them playing the 4 game max (LB Calvin Hart, RB Trent Pennix, WR Devin Carter).

LB Calvin Hart – 4
RB Trent Pennix – 4
WR Devin Carter – 4
CB Malik Dunlap – 2
DE Joseph Boletepeli – 2
WR Jasiah Provillon – 2
DE Joe Babros – 1

Pennix made the most of his playing time, accumulating 142 total yards of offense, and his first career touchdown against Georgia State. Carter had 1 reception for 11 yards against ECU in the final game of the regular season. Dunlap picked up 2 tackles. Boletepeli had 3 tackles.

Here’s the list of of Freshman that redshirted, and took zero snaps in 2018:

CB Taiyon Palmer

It’s worth noting that Palmer and Wilson missed the season due to injury.

Seven True Freshman played beyond the 4-game limit, therefore they aren’t eligible to Redshirt.

Dunn, McNeil and Tanner Ingle played in all 13 games.

Dunn shattered the record books in his first year in Raleigh, breaking the record for the most field goals made and points scored in a single season. Ingle tallied 44 tackles, which ranked 6th on the team. McNeil finished with 24 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks, and was named a 247Sports Freshman All-American.
