Former NC State basketball player Chucky Brown has been named the head coach at West Johnston High School.

“I think that you play so long and you’ve seen so much you want to share it with younger people,” Brown said. “Why not now? I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be here. I might as well do some good while I’m here.”

“I’m very excited to be here,” Brown said. “I’m excited to be a part of this team now. I’ve always been a part of a team and always been known as a good team player. I’m excited to work with these young men.”

Brown earned 1st Team All-ACC honors in 1989, and ranks 25th all-time in scoring (1,357). He led the Wolfpack in scoring in 1987-88 (16.6) and led the team in rebounding in 1988-89 (8.8). Brown ranks 3rd all-time in Career Field Goal Percentage (55.7%). He was a part of the last Wolfpack team to win the ACC Tournament (1987).

He went on to be drafted by the Cavs in the 2nd round of the 1989 NBA Draft, with the 43rd overall pick. Brown went on to spend 13 years in the NBA, tying Tom Gugliotta for the most by a former NC State player. He won an NBA Championship with the Rockets in 1995.

Brown has some experience coaching. He was an assistant coach for the Roanoke Dazzle from 2004-06 (NBA D-League), and the Los Angeles D-Fenders from 2006-09 (NBA G-League).

He went on to serve as the head coach for the D-Fenders for the 2019-10 season.

Honestly, Brown is walking into a situation with West Johnston that can only go up. Last season West Johnston was 2-23 overall, and 0-10 in conference. Their last winning season was 2009-10.
