Former NC State running back Matt Dayes has signed a 1-year deal with the New Orleans Saints.

Dayes was waived by the 49ers back on May 6th.

He was signed to the 49ers Practice Squad on October 9th, and was called up to the 53-man roster on November 12th. In total, Dayes played 7 games in 2018, seeing all of his action on special teams (2 tackles).

In 2017, the Browns drafted Dayes in the 7th round, and he played in all 16 games for Cleveland that year, returning 18 kickoffs for 437 yards.

Dayes was one of a handful of running backs the Saints worked out last Thursday.

They have their top two backs locked in between Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray, but the competition for two or three spots behind them is wide-open. Undrafted rookies Devine Ozigbo and A.J. Ouellette figure to push last year’s reserve Dwayne Washington for practice reps. The signing of Dayes makes it clear that they want to leave no stone unturned.
