Head Coach Dave Doeren spoke with the media after the NC State football teams first day of Fall Camp. The video is ABOVE, and a breakdown of what he had to say is BELOW.

Good energy today. You see the guys who have experience playing like you expect them to. A lot of young guys. Sloppy in some areas. When you have 11 Seniors, you’re going to have that. There was good attitude and effort. There’s a lot of film to watch. Excited to get in and see it. We will try each day to pull some of these mistakes off of the film.

On making a choice at Quarterback…

Until they show me, I’m not going to say anything. I’m not going to rush it. I’m not going to hide it. When I know, I’ll tell you guys.

Matt’s comfortable. He was comfortable last year. Bailey looked like he’s made some strides since the Spring. Devin, same way he was. Lot’s of reps we need to get.

On Joe Sculthorpe possibly being the starting Center…

Joe Sculthorpe isn’t set as the starting Center. We’re going to see who our best 5 are. Whether it’s with Joe at Center, or him at Guard with Grant Gibson at Center.  That will play itself out. Joe’s an experienced guy. I know he looked up to Garrett. If he ends up being our Center, he’d take a lot of pride in playing that role.

On having a young roster…

It’s a youthful roster filled with really good football players in those freshman/sophomore classes. We need some 18 year olds to play like they’re 20 this year.

This was the first time I’ve really seen Jordan Houston do anything since he’s been here, because he wasn’t here in the Spring, and he’s a really gifted guy.

Everyone wants to better than we were last year as a football team, but whoever plays quarterback isn’t going to be Ryan Finley as a 6th year Senior. You can’t duplicate that in your first year as a starter. But that doesn’t mean they can’t have a really successful season. We just need improvement on a daily basis, and when you have talent, you can do that. The end product ends up being something you’re proud of.

On the status of the Defensive Line…

I’m very excited for Larrell Murchison and James Smith-Williams, our two Seniors, Deonte Holden, when he gets back. Larrell and James have put themselves in a position if they have a productive season, to be just like those guys, and have opportunities. They are going to test well. They run well. They’re strong. It’s about putting together a body of work that will help you out down the road.

I think that Xavier Lyas and Joseph Boletepeli are probably our two most improved defensive linemen.

On this time of year…

This time of year is kind of like Christmas because you get to open your gifts. I can’t coach during the summer very much. You can’t put pads on. Today’s really not the day. It’s when you put pads on that you really can evaluate. It’s just fun to be back on the grass with the guys. You don’t sign up to be a coach to sit behind a desk.

On the ACC Network…

I’m just hoping the financial things that come with the ACC Network are what we’ve heard from the Commissioner. We expect it to be successful. An influx of income should be very helpful, for us facility wise, and some other stuff we can do. It comes at a good time, as you know, a lot of these other leagues are getting a lot more from their networks. Been able to do the Indoor Facility and redo our Training Room through private gifts, but all of a sudden, you start getting 10 million more dollars, you can do some things without asking, and that helps a lot.
